  1. To KevinG's point above, it is interesting how/why a story like the kids in the cave captivates so many people while a story like 3,000 kids at the Mexican border becomes accepted or a story like the boat that capsized off of Thailand on Saturday killing at least 44 people gets little to no attention. The Boston Globe had an opinion piece today on this issue: https://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2018/07/09/the-thai-teens-and-baby-well/GUNIR4mYKUQzIBIWgusf9O/story.html#comments
  2. I thought I understood the difficulty of what they were doing but then this morning there seemed to be a lot more video of it. Wow - that is extraordinary.
  3. I was there. My friend who I went with was a reporter and though he wasn't covering the show he showed his press ID to security and it got us through the traffic line.
  4. Elvis Costello reveals cancer diagnosis as he cancels tour dates: https://www.elviscostello.com/#!/news/297540
  5. Pruitt out. But the fact that he was allowed to resign and was praised by Trump, rather than being thrown out ages ago, is still problematic.
  6. Still enjoying this one a lot. Love the closing song - Pitch or Honey.
  7. I'm on board with this (except that I have no plans to go to Dublin).
  8. Yeah, my immediate reaction was that I'm bummed but as I looked into his numbers this year (including his contract) I totally get it.
  9. I watched this too and found it interesting and also very sad. And I saw in the news today that she is being charged with welfare fraud.
  10. Picked up a used copy of this the other day and I'm about half way through it. It's pretty interesting. One of the things that strikes me is how inexpensive the Village/East Village were at that time. Hell talks about how a lot of musicians ended up there because it was affordable. How times have changed ...
  11. Happy 70th birthday to the one and only Brian Peter George St John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno! It seems appropriate to put this one on.
  12. That's great! And you are right - there is something about being in a place where music was written or that inspired the music and it brings it all together. I've not been to Scotland but maybe this will inspire me to make a trip.
  13. Very sad news about Scott Hutchison.
  14. Juliana Hatfield sings Olivia Newton John
  15. Ezra? Or Pound? And I get it. If I avoided all art/music/literature by people who did horrible things then I'd miss out on a lot. Lou Reed is one of my musical heroes and by most accounts he was a pretty unpleasant guy. I agree with Kidsmoke's comments above about Woody Allen. I see his movies differently now (particularly Manhattan) than when I first saw them. I think the Diaz stuff is tricky for me because I am literally in the middle of his book while also reading these allegations against him.
  16. I know the relationship between the art and the artist is a tricky one and I'm mired in it right now. About a week ago I started reading Junot Diaz's "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," I've had it for a while but have never read it. Then I also read his piece in the New Yorker about the abuse he suffered as a child and felt sympathetic towards him. And then the allegations came out late in the week about his shitty and abusive behavior towards numerous people and I sort of don't want to read his book any more. I recognize that much of the art/music/literature that I have enjoyed over
  17. New album by Belly (called Dove).
  18. One of the great things about going to a game at Fenway is organist Josh Kantor. He's been in a bunch of bands, sits in with everyone from the Baseball Project to the Boston Pops, and he takes requests (via twitter) during the game. At tonight's game someone just requested Spiders and he responded "I mean... everybody loves an 11-minute song that pretty much only has one note, right? Stick around; I'll sneak it in at the end."
  19. One of my top 10 of all time.
  20. I ran into J Mascis on the street couple of hours before the Buffalo Tom show. I said hi and he nodded. He sat in with them on four songs including a very tasty cover of Mazzy Star's Fade Into You.
  21. Ha! Thanks. They are also two of the cornerstones of most of the music that I listen to.
  22. Now that's a story I'm not familiar with and I'm a little reluctant to google it here at work ...
  23. I see some similarities (some of which are superficial): They were both called the Warlocks Lou and Jerry both liked Ornette Coleman, and Lou and Bob played with Rob Wasserman They both experimented heavily with feedback early in their careers Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable had similarities to the Acid Tests They both felt like albums didn't capture their live show But feedback aside, I don't hear much in common musically. Even in their early improvisational noisy jams, the VU were about repetition where the Dead were emphatically not.
