Radiohead- In Rainbows

Recommended Posts

I was just busting on Pavement...I love them...but their first two albums were definitely their best.

I wasn't joking about SBS though...it's an awful P.O.S.

Yes, In Rainbows is a terrible name.

SBS is an average album, but it's better than In Rainbows. In Rainbows sounds like the Eraser produced by Godrich. What a snoozefest.

let me guess

a. you have yet to listen to the album from beginning to end without distractions

b. you've only skimmed the album and not devoted much attention

c. you did both A & B, but only once or twice

Let's just get this out of the way:

Look folks. The truth is todays bands absolutely SUCK compared to the 60's and 70's greats. Those giants would turn out masterpieces every two years, sometimes every year. Today we get these ok records every 3-4 years. Thom Yorke and his Pro Tools rig painstakingly craft songs for years on end because they can't play properly. Led Zepplin or Pink Floyd could shit out an album and have it be musically superior, and do it on a regular basis. There's a real lack of ROCK missing from the new "canon". It's like everyone took wimpy pills or something. Even the harder rock bands lack dynamic range with power. Shit, the 70's folk bands could lay it down heavier.

And in terms of live performances, Wilco and Radiohead get their tails kicked by bands like the Flaming Lips and the Drive By Truckers.

The Lips and Truckers are INCREDIBLE live shows, and they also make fantastic studio records. They are a real throwback to the true greats of the 60's and 70's.

End thread.

ouch.

on topic-

i have never listened to radiohead. should i start with this record?

I would start with the Bends, then go to OK Computer if you like that, then Hail to the thief, then this, THEN if you like all those, Kid A!

All of them, in my humble opinion, are fantastic, and in terms of how digestible they are, thats the order id go in.

Especially silly since, if one was to be on that one place, and went to the place on that one place to upload "things", one might see a warning in big-red-bold text warning them not to do exactly what you mentioned.

No. Get The Bends or OK Computer. The latter, especially, is a good autumn album.

i love the Lips, but he doesn't fit in that arguement because you know he doesn't have the greatest voice and i would bet they work pretty hard on laying down those vocals on the records. Thom Yorke likes to do one take and be done with it.

the Lips use pitch correction which probably helps Wayne a lot, I wonder if Radiohead does. there were four long years between Yoshimi and AWWTM, so the Lips are about the same as Radiohead in output these days. Bands getting bogged down in the studio always spells trouble for me, maybe that's why HTTT is my favorite Radiohead album since it was done quickly.

My main problem with HTTT is that it isn't that good.

To me, HTTT is Radiohead's AGIB: coming on the heels of an amazing album (grouping Kid A & Amnesiac as one album here) makes it feel slightly underwhelming. Also, both have a few questionable songs and run a good fifteen minutes too long. Nevertheless, both are good if not great albums, but to each his own, I guess.

There are times when Mr. Yorke's apparent hatred of music gets on my nerves.

In Rainbows is the Manute Bol to Sky Blue Sky's Muggsy Bogues.

If In Rainbows doesn't contain music, I'm at a complete loss as to what you think it does contain.
