lamradio
I've been a fan since the release of At Dawn. This record is a downright embarrassment. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's an embarrassment, but it's probably their worst record. There's still a few great songs on it.
you ever seen a ghost?
i'd say the truth lies somewhere in between the last two posts. -justin
tangara
Even more so, I am digging the vinyl At Dawn and Tennessee Fire reissues. If you are thinking of getting them, don't sleep. They are supposedly limited to 1000 (How many of the first press were there?) and red & yellow (AD) and green & blue (TF) look awesome, but I am sucker for colored vinyl. My store never even got them... I had to purchase them from the competition! I got mine... For those of you doing the Nashville show, there's also a midnight showing of Dazed & Confused at the Belcourt that night. Just a suggestion.
chisoxjtrain
My Morning Jacket is working on the next album already: http://www.nme.com/news/my-morning-jacket/37943
markosis
As a MMJ sceptic I decided to give Evil Urges a try. I haven't made it past the 6th song, and I'm not quite sure what I make of it. Just like Z, something just feels off. I know I'm supposed to like this band, but I can't grasp it.
bourbonbreath
EU is full of starts and stops for me... the title track, I'm Amazed, SFS, and Scream part 2 are my favs and hold up against anything they have recorded, but most of the record just doesn't do it for me. Of the six official releases it is my least fav... It Still Moves and At Dawn are one and two on my list. Live though... they are as strong as ever. Cannot wait for the show in Atl. markosis
Upon further inspection, I'm starting to enjoy the record. However, it still feels like a double-fisted punch of mediocrity, which MMJ has always felt like to me. How can a band so many people adore be so flat?
solace
ow can a band so many people adore be so flat? you could ask this about millions of bands, it's a pretty obvious answer...
quarter23cd
I know I'm supposed to like this band, but I can't grasp it.I give you permission to not like it. This band has thrown me for a loop. For years I didn't get what the big deal was about them, and then just in the last year or so I've started to see the light on At Dawn and It Still Moves. And then this record landed on me with a thud and seems to have stalled my overall momentum in getting into this band.
isadorah
I'm liking Evil Urges, but At Dawn is still ranking in as my fav by these guys. I think it's his voice on the slow melodic stuff that gets me everytime.
you ever seen a ghost?
honestly, i stopped playing Evil Urges after a very short while, b/c i only loved a few of tracks and the rest ranged from so-so to terrible. over the holiday weekend, i took a road-trip to Indiana with my fiance and stopped off in Louisville (MMJ's hometown) on the way there and on the way back. listened to At Dawn while going around doing the Louisville thing, even passed by Shelbyville where they recorded all the grain-silo stuff. sadly, they've lost that sound forever and what they replaced it with just isn't up to par. you see, some of EU sounds in the same vein as Z, just not as good...and the rest, well, is lyrically and melodically forgettable. -justin

quarter23cd
their major strength is their live showYeah, that's what I hear. Doesn't look like they're coming to my neck of the woods anytime soon, either. Louisville arguably isn't all that far of a road trip from Columbus, but I think I'll wait for them to come to me. jimmyjimmy
sadly, they've lost that sound forever. -justin Thankfully, I kinda doubt that's true.

markosis
Well, it helps to ignore "Highly Suspicious." Skip that one and you'll probably enjoy the album alot more. I think its funny: they seem very dead set on progressing, but the best tracks on EU are the ones where they don't sound like they're trying to progress. They seem to have a formula for good songs, they should stick to it for 12 tracks per record instead of 3.
Guest Cousin Tupelo
I'm liking Evil Urges, but At Dawn is still ranking in as my fav by these guys. I think it's his voice on the slow melodic stuff that gets me everytime. This is album was my first foray into MMJ. But the one thing I take away from the music and the vocalist -- especially the slow melodic stuff -- is it sounds remarkably like Boz Skaggs -- particularly Sec Walkin. LouisvilleGreg
I was at a red light at midnight the other night in Richmond and someone in the car next to me was blaring "I'm Amazed,: at the exact same time I was listening to "Aluminum Park." I tried to flag the person down but they didn't notice me. Thge world seemed pretty good at that moment.

quarter23cd
I try to play Highly Suspicious wherever I go and like to laugh along to the weird laughing parts. Especially if I'm wearing headphones at the time.
stooka
Jim James @ Newport I've only listened to a few - some have M Ward!
Tweedling
Gawd I love Matt Ward but I can't stand Jim James horseshit voice......is it just me?.......(don't answer that!)
TheMaker
What's weird is that, while I adore both of them and count them among their generation's finest singer-songwriters, I think it's pretty fucking obvious that Jim has a much, much better voice than Matt. (Penance and apology: Matt is the better guitar player.)
