remphish1
All these REM haters....I feel so alone, but I will keep my little REM fire going for all eternity. (And I like Reveal more than Automatic and Out of Time -- how's that for blasphemy). Especially Peter Buck -- for a guy in his 50s, he just is so rocking hot. For me, it's a very tight race for my guitar hero supremacy between PB and JT -- I now these guys are not on par with the greats, but screw that, I love em. You are not alone. I would rank REM's worst album still about an 8 out of 10! I love Reveal, Around the Sun and Accelerate way more than Ghost is Born..I am sure I am the only one here in that aspect! Anyhoo
Atticus
I have always been a huge Beatle fan, but check out this quote from a contemporary rock critic (1960s): Why should the Beatles limit themselves to pop? Why can't they just expand as they want, not thinking about categories? No reason--they're responsible only to themselves, and they can work whichever way they like. The only thing is, without pop, without its image and its flash and its myths, they don't add up to much. They lose their magic boots, and then they're human like anyone else; they become updated Cole Porters, smooth and sophisticated, boring as hell. Admitted, the posh Sundays say they're Art, but what's so great about Art? of all the terms that might be employed to describe the Beatles' music, "smooth and sophisticated" would never come to mind for me. they survive in my favor partially for the lack of slick overproduction that plagues many successful acts. I just can't subscribe to any theory that includes calling the Beatles un-innovative. that's just craziness.
Artifice
I agree about Buckley: beyond last goodbye, I just don't see the love. Okay, you, me, outside, RIGHT NOW! :rolls up sleeves:

Synthesizer Patel
Naw. He was on The Right Stuff Records. (I think that he had one album on Motown.) But def. not Stax.Discography I'm not entirely sure what The Right Stuff Records is, but I'm pretty positive that Al Green was on Hi Records. Personally, I think that Swamp Dogg as a producer and a musician is one of the finest Southern Soul men of all time. Otis Redding, James Carr & Clarence Carter are the other big three I love, but Swamp Dogg always edges it for the fact that he wrote most of (and produced) "I'm A Loser" by Doris Duke, "In Between Tears" by Irma Thomas and "Too Many People In One Bed" by Sandra Phillips all in about a year of each other, plus his own albums, plus his work with Raw Spitt. Moss
The only reason the producers ofSyd Barrett - The Madcap Laughsleft in the false starts on that record is for a cruel "let's laugh at the crazy guy" effect.Fucking makes me sick. So I wondered about this because it did not ring true. Now after reading a recent article in MOJO it rings even less true to me. Just wondering what gives you that impression? From everything I have read, people like David Gilmour went out of their way to help Syd make this record (at least partly out of a sense of guilt). From all accounts it was all they could do to get a good take with him falling asleep in the middle of them (among other things). My impression is they did what they could to get a good record and capture his personality. They certainly did not make a ton of money off it.

twoshedsjackson
had you made it, you may have a different opinion. the cover of Adam Ant, and then two Heart songs was pretty awesome.I saw her at Solid Sound. She's got a phenomenal voice & I've loved her music for years, but I think "greatest of all time" might be going a bit far. Still, to each their own.

Doug C
M. Ward is overrated and will be forgotten about in 5 years time. 5 years, 6 months and 13 days later... From Wikipedia "In 2013 Ward contributed guitar work to the Neko Case album The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You. Neko noted on her September 2nd, 2013 appearance on Comedy Bang! Bang! that Ward not only contributed but was "paid in full"." I am not trying to make a point. I am just bored at work (obviously, as I am reading 5 year old posts!). Besides, it fits in with the above Neko posts. 'Twas meant to be.
twoshedsjackson
her voice, her songs, her lyrics, her humor...she's got it all. let's hear yours!Well there are the obvious ones like Aretha, Mahalia Jackson and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Emmylou Harris and of course the Wilson sisters.Maria McKee has a great voice. I also love a girl named Harriet Wheeler. She sang for The Sundays. There's something about her voice that gets me every time. Again, not taking anything away from Neko - she certainly belongs in their company.

tinnitus photography
i wouldn't rate the Lindas nearly as high as Neko, as they didn't write their own material. actually, i'm much less familiar w/ Thompson's work, just assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that Richard did most of that heavy lifting. Joni, even though she's not my thing, I can certainly see. Aretha, too. right now, Neko's weak spot is the overall amount of material...she really only started coming into her own on Blacklisted, so that's only 4 records.
