Again, I am the only overbearing argumentative dick on this thread

Damnit. I must not have been trying hard enough.

That's a really good article.

Dear Penthouse,

I never thought it could happen to me, but at the GOP convention in St. Paul, Palin was completely unfazed by the boys' club fraternity she had just joined. One night, Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter went to her hotel room to brief her. After a minute, Palin sailed into the room wearing nothing but a towel, with another on her wet hair. She told them to chat with her laconic husband, Todd. "I'll be just a minute," she said.

This is the first time I ever voted for a winner in a presidential race.

7-2 here

I keep seeing all sorts of conservative pundits on TV talking about how Obama was not elected to run a liberal administration, but that the people want him to be a centrist and to appeal to Republicans. Not sure by what basis, other than conventional wisdom, they're saying this on, but it occurred to me that a lot of the people saying that now are the same ones who were yelling from the mountaintops that Obama is "The Most Liberal Member of the Senate". Many of them cried it repeatedly throughout the campaign. Now, I don't believe that Obama is anywhere near the most liberal Senator, but shouldn't it be asked -- if Obama is in fact that most liberal Senator, as they themselves proclaimed repeatedly, then isn't his election proof that voters do in fact want him to be a liberal President? I know that I'm asking this of the type of TV pundit that shouldn't really be taken seriously anyway, but isn't this glaring lack of logic too big for no one to call them out?

FWIW, Rahm has reportedly been offered the job, but has yet to accept.

The headline and the article suggest two different things:

Democratic officials told NBC News that Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel was offered the job of White House chief of staff, and that he had accepted. A spokesman for Emanuel, however, was unable to confirm the appointment.

The city showed itself capable of handling an excited crowd last night. I couldn't believe how smoothly entry to the park was, even with the increased security measures (secret service all over, metal detectors, frisking). Based on my other experiences with large crowds in Grant Park, I had assumed the city to be completely incapable of it. And yeah, they had a lot of help this time around (from the federal government, the Obama organization, and an incredibly well behaved crowd), but I was still impressed. Not sure if they could pull it off for longer than a night, but if last night is an indication, then perhaps they could.

Wilco, Obama, the Olympics..when will it be enough for you Chicago elitists?

Speaking as the New York elitist that I am, part of my desire for a Chicago Olympiad is the fear of what one in New York would do to the entire metropolitan area. Shit barely functions as it is!

Last night the Fox News coverage was also carried on the Fox broadcast stations.

Wasn't it Shepard Smith on the regular broadcast stations?

I'd be happier to hear that they were adopting an adult dog from the animal shelter. Who the hell is going to be running a puppy outside five times a night when you live at the white house?

I heard PAWS chicago is all over this.

NBC reporting Rahm Emanuel accepts position of White House chief of staff.

So much for "governing from the center".

wtf? I was trying to figure this out last night and am too lazy to look through the state constitution... do we hold a special election to replace Obama's seat (and I guess maybe Emanuel's?) or does (oh please no) the governor appoint someone?

Sorry Kim.

... Now, I don't believe that Obama is anywhere near the most liberal Senator...

It was some kind of rating system that looks at actual voting records that declared him the most liberal senator. There were facts behind it.

No, because he didn't run on the liberal stances he has a record of voting for. In fact, he ran with some downright conservative ideas (tax reductions the most obvious). That's what makes this so perplexing to me. He was just elected President, and not until now will we actually see where he will govern on certain issues.

:thumbup

Got my dog at PAWS and I volunteer there about once a week. Great organization. That would be awesome if the Obamas adopted from there.

It's a pretty discredited system though. They don't really explain how they weigh things, and coincidentally the frontrunners for the Dem nomination get named "Most Liberal" pretty much every single time.

We never see how someone will govern until they are elected.

The same pundits were decrying Obama's tax plan, which you're calling conservative, as pure Socialism.

Report: Threats To Obama Rose As Palin's Crowds Grew More Frenzied

By Greg Sargent - November 5, 2008, 2:00PM

During the campaign the frenzied crowds at Sarah Palin rallies did seem indicative of something frightening in the air, and it turns out that there was a reason to conclude this, Newsweek reports:

The Obama campaign was provided with reports from the Secret Service showing a sharp and disturbing increase in threats to Obama in September and early October, at the same time that many crowds at Palin rallies became more frenzied. Michelle Obama was shaken by the vituperative crowds and the hot rhetoric from the GOP candidates. "Why would they try to make people hate us?" Michelle asked a top campaign aide.

Saw this link on Bob Mould's Blog - The poetic symmetry of history

Consider these two things:

1. The modern conservative movement began with the crushing defeat of Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater in the 1964 presidential race. The modern conservative movement ends with the crushing defeat of Arizona Sen. John McCain -- who took Goldwater's Senate seat upon his retirement -- in the 2008 presidential race.

2. Modern liberalism began its implosion with riots in Chicago's Grant Park at the 1968 Democratic Convention. Tonight, modern liberalism is reborn at Chicago's Grant Park, where a black Chicago Democrat will celebrate winning the presidency.

1) I guess that's true to an extent.

2) Don't get me wrong, I think the plan is complete crap. My point is that he ran on a "tax-reduction" platform. Whether or not he'll ever do it, and disregard it raises the shit out of taxes for some, it's rare for a Democrat to run on a tax-reduction plan. That's all I was saying.
