I was listening to Ladies and Gentlemen on my commute this morning.  That 4 night run at the Fillmore represents the very best of Pig and the band as a whole during that era.  April 28 and April 29 were among the very first cassettes I got way back in the day in college in mid-70's.  The Dark Star > St. Stephen > NFA > GDTRFB > NFA sequence of April 28 has always been among my absolute favorite Dead jams of any era.  If anyone has not properly listened to that, I suggest you drop everything and give it a spin!

Hell yes - Tom Constanten sits in!

Those shows were a few of my first tapes as well.

  1. "Clementine Jam" (studio jam 8/13/68) (Grateful Dead) – 10:46
  2. "Nobody's Spoonful Jam" (studio jam 8/13/68) (Grateful Dead) – 10:04
  3. "The Eleven Jam" (studio jam 8/13/68) (Grateful Dead) - 15:00

That has become some of my favorite Dead music.  I was so surprised when I first heard it...like, Where has this stuff been? But I realized it was strictly in-studio stuff without vocals, so of course it hadn't been put on an official release...Best bonus tracks ever!

I agree. I recall reading somewhere that those tapes were found after the work was finished on Aoxomoxoa for the boxset. So they went back and added those on as bonus tracks.

Wow. One man's afterthought is another man's gold. Glad they found those.

On the other hand, the bonus tracks on American Beauty and Workingman's were surprisingly so-so. I guess there was nothing anywhere near as stellar to draw from, compared to the original releases.

I sort of wish there were some cool bonus tracks on the Beatles mono box set, but I guess that is a topic for a different thread....

"Tuesday & Wednesday, October 1 & 2, 2013, The Pearl @ The Palms Casino in Las Vegas, NV. General Admission tickets are available for $94.00. Balcony tickets are available for $84.00. The first mail in date for these performances is Wednesday, April 17, 2013.
Friday, Saturday & Sunday, October 4, 5, 6, 2013 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. Pit and reserved tickets are available for $74.75. The first mail in date for these performances is April 22, 2015."

There were other shows at a little cheaper on the slated tours but christ this is getting a little ridiculous with the prices.

I've always liked that version of Dire Wolf with Bob singing lead. And Jerry on the pedal steel.

Oh yeah, that one is very cool. I was thinking more of the off-key/out-of-tune vocals on some of the other tracks. Reminded me, unfortunately, of some of the tracks on many of the Dick's Picks and Dave's Picks releases.

that is ridiculous.  go late and get a cheap ticket.  these guys never sell out.

what i would pay some money for is phil, bob, jay and jason in a small theater with an episode of Weir Here at set break.  that would be quite satisfying.  the slow tempos they play these days work better in a smaller, semi acoustic setting.  i just love weir here.

oh, and i'd love to see bob and rob tour again.  so great.

My favorite thing about the box was the live tracks that were used to fill out the CDs. Stuff like "Operator" and "Till The Morning Comes" were certainly a bit rough, but given the rarity of some of the tunes it was a welcome addition.

I just heard on Tales on the Golden Road Radio show that Weir is going to take Weir Here on the road (towards the end of the year).

Below is a link to the Tales' shows, in case you do not have XM/Sirius. Weir talks about it on the 4.21.13 show.

4/24/78, Normal IL (35 years ago today): Stayin' Alive Tease -> Me & My Uncle

Yep, they actually did that.

IMO no. I thought the band acted professionally in what must have been a confusing and scary situation.

"The band keeps playin' on". That's what they do. Hey, there were death threats against Garcia at Deer Creek, and the damn fence was torn down from a riot, they went on and played.

Bobby is certainly no stranger to drugs and alcohol, and it saddens me greatly to think he was not together last night. Something is definitely wrong here, and there's no way you can spin this one. Let's give the man some vibes, OK? He's given us a lifetime of good music and good times. And don't go hatin' on Phil, either. Let's get some more information.
