A pal of mine who went to Lockn, also, was carping on Chris Robinson for "tragically butchering" the "Morning Dew." Any insight into his take? I know there is video available but I can't view at work....

Poor choice of words on my part -- what I meant was that I saw Phil play with Billy, Mickey, and Bobby at the Fare Thee Well shows - so I won't miss him too much down in St. Louis.

I did not go to Lockin -- worldrecordplayer did - he may know.

I was there, but it all melts into one and I cannot offer any particular insight into that version of Dew. I am not a Chris Robinson fan in general, so not surprised nothing from that set stands out in my mind. Even though I am a big Krasno fan. I guess the one takeaway is I didn't notice or recall a butchering of the Dew.

I watched it during my lunch and it's all fucked up. The "Rider" to follow it is tight as hell, though....

Has anyone watched the Billy & the Kids with Weir set? That was the biggest surprise set to me, given how nervous Weir usually makes me these days. I watched the pro shot video, and it was as good as I thought it was at the time.

Doing more 1978 listening and I came across what sound to me like a couple nuggets.  One is the Wharf Rat and the Sugar Magnolia from 4-22-78 Nashville (the latest Dave's Pick, right?) https://archive.org/details/gd1978-04-22.133792.sbd.miller.flac16

and a really good Fire on the Mountain from 4-11-78 Atlanta. https://archive.org/details/gd1978-04-11.sbd.miller.108666.flac16   The ending of the Fire is, well, on fire!   :dance So is the ending of the Wharf Rat from Nashville.  Those are the kind of peaks and crescendos that I crave and that make a version really standout to me.  Jerry's soloing his ass off!

Why does Weir make you nervous?  Just curious.  Are you afraid he'll fall over while playing Unbroken Chain again?  My concern is that he's gonna play the tunes too damn slow…which he ultimately does.  Love Bobby!

While you are at it - check out the night before at The Rupp Area. Nice show. 1978 is a fine year. Though you have to weed thru the hits and misses. When its a hit --- its out of the park.

Why does Weir make me nervous? Well, falling over on stage is one reason. Losing his place, cutting in on jams, forgetting lyrics, slowing things down. To be clear, I'm a huge Weir fan over the course of the GD's career, but at this point I expect him to be more of a hindrance to the music than an asset. He proved me wrong at Lockn' with Billy.

Thanks for the suggestion!  I've listened to that show, but not in awhile, I think the first set is really good, from what I remember. I agree about '78.  They could be sluggish and plodding on some nights and rip roaring on others.  April was a strong month that year, as was Feb.  I don't care for New Year's Eve that year nor is Egypt very impressive to me overall other than some cool moments here and there.  October Winterland run is pretty hot and so is the first run at Red Rocks in July.

It was a top year for Black Peter and Stella Blue and Its All Over Now and Estimated Prophet, imo.  What I think are probably the best versions ever performed were in 1978 for those songs.

Shorter than for Hey Jude though  :twitchsmile

Choose: Brent version vs. Pigpen version. Death is not an option.

I'm not offended by Day Job, find it listenable, but didn't see any Dead shows in the 80's. There's one or two worse Jerry tunes (Believe it or Not, If I Had the World to Give???). Lots of worse Bob tunes.

You can find someone that likes pretty much every Dead song, except Samba in the Rain. Once had a conversation with a guy who thought the lyrics to Easy Answers were cool.

That is hilarious!

I always liked all the 'new' tunes, just didn't think they ever belonged in the second set.  Samba and Way to Go Home would've been fun first set closers.  I do like Believe It Or Not.  Day Job was a fun, dumb song.  Glad it never made a record though.  Was Brother Esau ever maligned?

The worst Dead tune has to be I Will Take You Home.  Sorry Brent…RIP (although I did like Jerry's midi trumpet on that one.

Thanks for the tip on that cool site.

What could you really say after that run? ....Thank you..... Good Night!

Is there someone who likes Long Long Long Long Way to Go Home?

I really like Way to Go Home, but that is the era of the Dead I grew up on. I was a post-Touch Head. Jerry has some real bluesy, ripping licks. Vince brings some intensity, and then a cool vocal breakdown. Fun tune, but agree it would've been better in the first set.

How about Eternity? If you were in the right headspace, could be a great tune. But I saw it once in the second set, when they probably should've played Estimated, and another time to end a first set, which was a real let down.

I actually listened to a Eternicheese recently (10/5/94 iirc) and it definitely has the potential to "go places". A few years of seasoning and a healthier Garcia would have most likely taken that tune to some great spaces.

I'd have to say IWTYH was probably my least favorite GD song EVER. Sorry, Brent. I was there for the first version and it might have been the biggest WTF? moment in my touring career.

I recently listened to IWTYH from Alpine '89(?) and it nearly brought a tear to my eye, thinking about Brent having a year left to live and the resulting broken promises he makes in the song to his kid(s).

I didn't mind IWTYH when I was at shows but find it cringe-worthy listening these days. Never liked Eternity or Samba, either. Both are painfully bad, like a Childhood's End to the gut followed by an upper of Wave to the Wind.

I didn't mind Long Way to Go Home, though, because of Garcia's guitar work and the nice kick-up jam in the middle....

And, again, "Day Job" wasn't a bad tune as much as it was a poor encore tune (it was a lot more tolerable/enjoyable as a first set opener/closer, and even a second set opener!). Some of the earlier version have some serious Rock to them, imo.
