  1. This is one of the greatest songs ever written in my humble opinion. Fay's version is excellent and both of his albums are in print and well worth tracking down. If you just want to sample, both Bill Fay and Time of the Last Persecution have been upped to many mp3 album sharing sites and a google search will probably lead you to them. I recommend eventually going out and getting them, come on for Be Not So Fearful alone the man deserves my 12.99. I am extremely thankful to Tweedy and O'Rourke for plugging this guy and getting me into him. --Mike
  2. Have a good one buddy, I'm hoping your Scarlet Knights go 11-1 this year . --Mike
  3. My Mountaineers looked a little sloppy last night against Maryland but freshman Noel Devine's line 5 carries for 136 yards! is pretty hard to mess with. The defense looks improved too, but this is probably not the fourth best team in the country. --Mike
  4. I like these guys. I thought they'd be a little more experimental based on Mike's leanings, but these are all damn fine pop songs. --Mike
  5. . Also of I Am Trying To Break Your Heart fame. --Mike
  6. Wilco's few songs without guitars are actually pretty good Another Man's Done Gone, Venus Stopped The Train, Rhythm (Cars Can't Escape). --Mike
  7. This is excellent right up there with the great Something Awful and Clell Tickle parodies of the site. --Mike
  8. The piano break in Ashes of American Flags, right after the noise section as Jeff sings "I'm down on my hands and knees everytime a doorbell rings, I shake like a toothache..." The end of Poor Places When the drums kick in in At Least That's What You Said Um... in I'm a Wheel The slide/steel guitar part in Jesus, etc that echoes Jeff's "voices whine part" John's opening bass riff on Handshake Drugs "I am so out of tune with you", the end of Sunken Treasure The hammer dulcimer on Company in My Back and The Late Greats and Nels guitar licks on that track live. When the violins come in on On and
  9. McSweeney's and The Believer are fantastic, you would be my hero if you ended with anything in those. If you are just looking for publication, I'd check out any area colleges to see if they do any literary type magazines, because they are always looking for submissions and even though it might be relatively small time, though some of their productions are as good if not better than anything, it's a great place to get your foot in the proverbial door. As a fellow Mike, who is also working on a novel, I wish you luck. --Mike
  10. That's the one that comes to mind to me right away. Most of the YHF Demos have a real Beatley or Plastic Ono Band-era feel to them. Alone, Nothing Up My Sleeve, Won't Let You Down, early versions of Kamera, Poor Places and Cars Can't Escape. --Mike
  11. In one of the 9:30 club shows from 2002, in fact I think it's the one where Leroy falls off the stage, he talks about crapping his pants during Heavy Metal Drummer at a show --Mike

    Summerteeth

This and Ghost go back and forth for the distinction of being my second favorite album by the Wilcos, Foxtrot will probably always be number one. It's an amazing record, lyrically it's probably Tweedy's best work. You haven't really lived until you've driven someone who just gave you the "just friends" speech home with this record on. Or actually make that you have lived a healthy and very good life if you have never done that. --Mike
  13. All of my daydreams are disasters A soft sadness had her much more than her loneliness Candy left over from Halloween A unified theory of everything Love left over from lovers leaving Books, they all know they're not worth reading They're not worth reading All of Poor Places... Oh it's okay for you to say What you want from me I believe that's the only Way for me to be, exactly What you want me to be Hide in the weeds The orchestra Is proving death again
  14. My last one was Venus Stops The Train into We're Just Friends into Leave Me Like You Found Me. However, overall it has to be Muzzle of Bees and In a Future Age. --Mike
  15. Here's something similar and equally brilliant SCTV Michael McDonald
  16. Too Far Apart! That's excellent. Can't wait to here more. --Mike
  17. I must say I find the whole "one must take drugs to create good art" arguement to be complete and utter bullshit. In fact, I think it's probably just something drug dealers just started saying so they could make more money. The truth is if you are blessed enough creatively with enough talent and imagination you can create art, drugs or no drugs. Now drugs have certainly served as a catalyst for some great art over the years, and they were very much in the picture for Elliott in his later stages, however he wasn't on heroin when he recorded Either/Or, which is probably his best work. They've
  18. I'm pretty sure that record became From A Basement On The Hill, which they were apparently about 30 songs recorded for. What I've heard is that Brion stopped working with Elliott on the album, because he was uncomfortable with Smith's drug abuse and wanted him to get cleaned up. --Mike
  19. I'll third that, possibly the definitive lineup for me, no offense Mrs. Cline and Sansone. --Mike
  20. If you can see this guy live, do it. One of the most exciting concerts I've seen in the past couple of years. The Boxing Mirror has been in pretty solid rotation for me since it came out. Looking forward to this one. --Mike
