  1. A fan fell from the 2nd deck of Arlington stadium during the Rangers/Indians game. He was apparently moving all extremeties and speaking at the hospital. Four who he landed on were injured but treated on site. The looks of players and other spectators who witnessed the fall were telling.
  2. Owen Meany is 10,000,000x better a book than Simon Birch is a movie. Glad you read it.
  3. If you don't like watching the World Cup or any brand of soccer, that's fine. To each their own, but all of your critiques listed here apply to other sports. Horrendous officiating - Baseball, basketball (cheating ref in the NBA) Ridiculous dives - Again, baseball (players leaning in to "take one for the team"), basketball, almost any athlete will feign injury to get a judgment from a ref. I will grant this happens more in soccer than other sports, but that's because of the nature of the fouling. Uruguay-Ghana discussion - Almost any sport discussed on any discussion board.
  4. I thought there were horns in both. 2 of my favorite tracks on Revolver, the overlap in my head.
  5. I agree with this. I have a hard time arguing that a goal should be rewarded when the ball didn't cross the goal line, even if only for cheating.
  6. Des Moines' 80/35 festival yesterday. Yo La Tengo & Spoon were great. Relax with family today. Grill if the rain stops.
  7. Klose almost looked liked he was apologizing to the Argentinian goalie at the end of the game.
  8. One more. I remember watching this show live and wondering exactly what Westerberg asks at the beginning. Network TV showing Lou Reed, Replacements, Bowie (easier to understand being on network TV). It was like a show catered to exactly me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5CaagwSYGk

  10. Red card which means he was kicked out of this game and automatically suspended for the next. A totally appropriate penalty for a handball in the penalty area.
  11. That's like saying a running back who had a clear shot to the end zone except for the defender who horse collared him ought to be rewarded a touchdown. Granted, NBA has their goal tending rule, but soccer doesn't. The defender acted in a moment of desperation, he's already suffered consequences and will suffer more. Again, his team benefited not from his foul but from Ghana's inability to score the PK.
  12. They were rewarded by the dismal PK attempt by the Ghana player. PKs are usually an extraordinary opportunity for a team to score an easy goal in a sport in which scores are usually few and far between. BTW, I hope the Dutch win too.
  13. I think any non-soccer fan who watched the end of that Uruguay v. Ghana game would be converted, except that it had to be settled by PKs.
  14. Low, Heroes, Lodger are indispensable.
  15. Living in America - James Brown Lots & lots of Beach Boys
  16. Proud to be an American - Lee Greenwood
  17. It doesn't bother me, but I can understand not liking it a helluva lot more than not liking Good Day Sunshine. The horns on that just kill me.
  18. That song is brilliant. The album is as flawless as an album gets. Here, There and Anywhere I can understand, but Good Day Sunshine? Shocked!
  19. My wife just reminded me of this. I can never forgive him for his role in helping the Saints win the NFC championship game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDs3U9IeYg0&feature=related
  20. I was thinking he had a heart attack. Funny that the guy retired twice very publicly (albeit, once as Ziggy) and now seems to have retired for real without any hoopla. The man did some great stuff, he was really my gateway into a world of strange music. Whatever he's doing I hope he's enjoying life (slightly) removed from the public view.
  21. My kids have almost outgrown the Wiggles, not quite yet. I just showed them your picture and they were quite happy.
  22. Unbelievable. Mahut just wanted off the court at the end of that and then they had the ceremony. We left the house yesterday to take the kids to the dentist, then to Toy Story 3. Then we went to a restaurant and saw the match was still on TV. Crazy, crazy stuff. There will be books written and movies made to celebrate this match. I thought maybe one of them was going to have a Richie "The Baumer" Tenenbaum-like meltodwn at some point.
  23. VU - Loaded Bob Mould - Workbook Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall, Tomorrow the Green Grass Wilco - YHF Then there's jazz Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus Miles Davis - Kind of Blue Charles Mingus - Ah,Um, Mingus Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Blues & Roots Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners John Coltrane - A Love Supreme I suppose there's a lot more jazz CDs I'd list here than rock because jazz is so much more about the performance than the songwriting. A great jazz combo can make a mediocre tune brilliant.
  24. Taibbi's piece on Palin in 2008 was brilliant.
