jhc
Thanks to MeDave for pulling up the old archived topics - lots of info out there on what Wilco is using, so I thought we should have a thread on what resident VC musicians are using. My basic setup is Les Paul or Telecaster (neck humbucker) into a Traynor YVC40WR combo. Pedals can include any of the following Ernie Ball volume pealBuss TU2 tunerVox V847 WahBoss SD1 overdriveLovepedal Cot50 overdrivePrunes and CustardDeluxe Memory Man delayDanelectro mini tremoloYamamha Magicstomp (for various reverbs, delays, or random effects) Obviously the Prunes and Custard is the most "Wilco-specific" and is highly useful for a lot of AGIB material. I have mine set basiclly like Tweedy does - Mix @ 10:00 and Drive at 2:00, Level is variable. I find that at fairly high volumes the synthy weirdness is much less noticeable, but at bedroom levels I need to use it on the "Bass" setting or the harmonics are too crazy. Pairing it with another overdrive can also tame it a bit. With delay and reverb it sounds really good for the Spiders rhythm part or the solos in Handshake Drugs. guitargeek85
I have a PRS Santana SE (2000 or 2001 model) Ibanez K-7 Signature 7-string guitar. B.C. Rich Warlock guitar. I also have a crappy handed down acoustic. I use a Fender Cyber Deluxe amp. It is 65 watt with a bunch of built in effects. I have a Dunlop Wah-Wah Pedal. I also have a Digitech Signature Series pedal. It has 7 effects on it. I use Regular Slinky Stings and Dunlop Pics. I think that is about it... nicburto
i play an american strat with texas specials and a Fender 212 deville. I don't use many effects - just an original crybaby and a boss overdrive/distortion when i need it. But basically i just use the overdrive on the amp. it works for me... SarahC
my guitars: Dean Performer GN (acoustic/electric)... i just bought it this year and it's a great guitar... Fender Sratocaster (japanees model '89-'90)...three tone sunburst, Floyd Rose whammy bar system... great low action... i love it... Decca acoustic guitar... I have no idea where it came from, my Grandfather rescued it from a burning building... Homemade Acoustic guitar... my Grandfather made it for me for X-mas 4 years ago and there is no other guitar like it in the world. Rosewood neck and Spruce top, there's Birch in there too somewhere, as well as a hand painted rose opposite the pick gaurd and my name on the headstock... Effects: Boss Distortion Pedal... it makes enough noise to make my parents yell at me to turn it down... Amps: Fender Frontman F-15 which doesn't work because there's a blown fuse and I can't figure out how to replace it Peavy Pacer... not sure about the wattage or anything, though it makes the windows rattle. Pecan_Pie
Electric - G&L ASAT Tribute Semi-Hollow, pretty guitar (my guitar teacher loves to stare at it for my whole lesson) with fairly low action, big honky G&L pick-ups, warmness, and of course... twang Effects - 70s Maestro Phase Shifter (as seen in the wilco book).. perfect for those big star songs.TS808 Tubescreamer reissue... eh sounds like shit but works when you need mucho distortion.Boss CS-3, now this thing is perfect for playing your guitar louder when it's clean, or just overdriving your amp without fucking annoying tubescreamer sound. Amp - Mesa-Boogie Subway Blues, Verrry nice amp with the best reverb i've ever heard, and 20 tube watts that starts to distort at 1/3 volume... this bloody amp is the loudest amp i've ever played... nails alot of wilcoy distortions, and neil young. Acoustic - Taylor 110, it's a cheaper taylor, but i've never played another acoustic guitar i've loved this much. Edit: DO NOT use thoses fucking expensive Elixer strings on your taylors like they recommend, way overpriced and don't last half as long as the warm beautiful 3 months of Martin SP Bronzes i put on... they sound like heaven on my guitar. Misc - Sushi Sticks, Capo, bike parts, water bottle caps, etc... all used in the tradition of sonic youth of course.. Edited October 18, 2005 by Pecan_Pie

Amplification:Vox Valvetronix AD120- Sounds amazing and is loud as hell. Drums:Cheap 3/4 size Mapex- They get the job done and they record particularly well.

nicburto
my 212 deville is too loud for me - can anyone recommend a good one speaker amp (pref tube) with lower wattage? I want something that starts breaking up fairly low - i've heard that deluxes are good....also, i think i'm gonna trade in my 212 deville, so probably something under 500 would be good. any ideas? It is loud - no problem cutting through clear while jamming with drums and a 2x12 marshall who's owner likes to drown everyone out. i wish it had a speaker out but aside from that i'm very happy for well under $500. going down from there there's always the pro jr. 15 w of pure tube OD bliss but still to loud to crank in an apartment setting... or if you're looking for real quiet apartment sound but with real tube sound and breakup there is the zvex nano. 2.5 watts or something, fits in the palm of your hand.... on my lottery winning wishlist. I've got a deluxe and its awesome. It can play plenty loud if you want but I also use it in my dorm room...very versatile. Great sound clean, my only complaint is the distortion is a bit muddy but its fine if you keep the drive down. I bought mine used for around $550 (i think i dont exactly remember). The fender blues jr. and little brother the pro junior are probably perfect for you. Very Similiar tone to the deville but much lower wattage and one speaker. I'd like to own a pro becaure they are so tiny and sound so good. Plus, if you are playing a club or whatever, you can always just mic it to achieve the right amount of stage volume. And they're cheap!

Theobscureart
When I play with the band, my setup is pretty simple... old Epiphone Zephyr or '74 tele into Fulltone Fulldrive; Teese Wah; Red Witch Phaser; Danelectro DanEcho (or EchoPlex if it's working well that day) into a late model tweed Fender Blues Deluxe 410 or Vox AC 15 cranked up. For solo shows, I for some reason use a ton of stuff because I sing like I do, so I use a lot of textural things. Same as above, but with the additon of a Rickenbacker 360 Mapleglo or Gretsch Tennessee Rose (I use these 4 guitars and sometimes more for solo shows- hardly ever an acoustic even though I write and play a lot of "acoustic" style folky stuff.) then I add a Z. Vex trem probe; an old boss chorus; Prescription Electronics Experience pedal; Electro Harmonix 16 delay; and some others come and go. 2 things that I've been singing the praises of since I've found out about them are the Tone in Progress 3rd Hand. If you're not familiar with this pedal- and you wanna play AGIB style stuff- you should be. It's an expression pedal you can use to control any parameter of basically any pedal. It connects to a knob of most any box out there and you can rock it to control tremolo depth, phaser rate, etc. Buy 3 and use them all. Also, believe it or not, the Johnson J-Station amp modeling and fx box. It's like a POD. I don't think they make 'em anymore. I've owned many amps, pedals, etc. including the POD, but the Matchless DC-30 model alone on the J-Station makes it worth owning... Sounds kinda like Jeff's Savage amp that he played through a lot a few years ago... You can probably get it for under a hundred bucks these days... seriously... It's not exactly a DC-30, but just using your guitar volume knob, you can get a huge range of tones through this model (and the like- 16 others.) Don't make fun of me for this computer thing-- It's real. I know it's not the same as a $3000 amp, but damn... it's neat. Peace and Chicken Grease.
