Good to see Mr. McCarthy won the Pulitzer for this one. So very dark, but with the ultimate hope never lost...the last 5 pages had me in tears

Julian Barnes - Metroland.

That dude can write.

I just finished History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters - I loved it so much I immediately moved on to England, England - which was pretty disappointing. So, Metroland is good?

Has anyone read the new Martin Amis book, House of Meetings?

this book should be required reading for all world leaders...

it's a classic, and McCarthy is up there with the giants of literature.

Yes, Metroland is quite good. A quick read too. Your proverbial coming of age story. Reminds me of Tolstoy's Childhood, Boyhood, Youth mixed with a bit of Catcher in the Rye. If that makes any sense.

Can't wait to check this one out. Gald that they rushed it to paperback because of the Oprah Book Club thing. Now I can actually afford to read it (of course, I could and probably will just go to the library for it....).

In memory of...

Tiger got to hunt,

Bird got to fly;

Man got to sit and wonder, "Why, why, why?"

Tiger got to sleep,

Bird got to land;

Man got to tell himself he understand.

Reading this one at work:

themammothhunterscoverom5.jpg

Light and fluffy second sequel to Clan of the Cave Bear. Clan is still the best of the bunch, where the 1st sequel, The Valley of Horses, while having some interesting moments also had far too many poor story elements, notably the story of the two brothers, which I felt was silly and not up to the level that Clan started. I'm about halfway through Mammoth and so far it's better than Horses, but a notch down from Clan.

Rereading this one at home:

Hopefully I plan to reread this one and and the next 3 sequels in time for the release of the fifth book, which I believe is suppose to be in the fall.

Also plan to reread the last 2 Harry Potters in time for the publishing of the final one, so I better get reading them soon.

A buddy of mine used to own a bookstore in VA with his wife and used to send me a bunch of advance copies of books and I'm just now getting to the meat of them. I've never read Rushdie before and like his style as exemplified in the first 30 pages of this I knocked out last night:
