Wilco involved with Neil Finn project with Radiohead/Johnny Marr etc

Recommended Posts

I said in my earlier post that the version of You Never Know on this album is identical to that on W(TA). That is not in fact the case. Someone elsewhere pointed out to me, and my ears have confirmed upon close listening, that there is more instrumentation in the mix on The Sun Came Out (fuzzy guitar, Wurlitzer - both credited to Neil Finn). They're subtle differences (it's still the same take of the song), but they really flesh out the song and I think I prefer this version to the one on W(TA).

Something I found interesting about the 2 versions of this song is that the fuzz guitar and Wurlitzer disappeared from the WTA version, but Neil Finn's harmonies were left on (uncredited)

Maybe I'm the only one here who's heard this so far? (Yes, I'm a nut to have gone through the trouble to get this so soon.)

After listening to this about 10 times now, a question and a couple of comments:

Have John Stirratt or Pat Sansone ever sung on any Wilco recordings? I'm liking the sound of both of their voices on this album. Their songs are very nice. There's also a very cool percussion-only track with Glenn Kotche and Phil Selway.

Even after 10 listens, I still think the Jeff Tweedy song What Could Have Been is the best thing on here. Followed closely by Lisa Germano's Reptile.

John and Pat sing alot when Wilco plays live. Especially John, he's a key backup vocalist.

What Could Have Been is going to generate alot of attention around here when people hear it, I expect. What a cool song!

The 7 Worlds Collide is up on Waffles...

One listen and I really like it - so much music - it will require a bunch of listens...

Oh yeah, GO BUY THE RECORD ON 9/29.

For sure, buy the record, and support Oxfam on 9/29, and listen to it alot. Some great stuff, all across the gamut. Has anyone besides me and brownie heard What Could Have Been? Awkwardly beautiful perhaps?

It's up on What? as well.

Jeff's track starts off cool but just doesn't bring the vocal punch I'm accustomed to.Some other nice tracks on there though. It's sort of crap that they put You Never Know on there even though it does have some slight variations. It would have been nice to get something different.

Wasn't Jeff doing Fake Plastic Trees supposed to be on this?

Too Blue is killer, super Beatlesesque and damn damn catchy, a great way to start the album.

What Could Have Been is sorta boring IMO, John's song is alright but what I actually think is the best Wilco personnel contribution is Pat's song, really really good I think.

Send me your address and I will gladly share a Waffles invite with you. It needs to be sent directly to a live email account in order for you to accept and start using the service.

Also, download Transmission - it is way better than the other BitTorrent clients.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've had the Sun Came Out for a couple of weeks now and I'm really enjoying it. Definately worth a buy, the money goes to a great cause. I would still buy it though even if the money went to the Russian mafia. I had downloaded the live concert a few months ago and it was great to re-live. I think some songs sounded better live, even with the yobbo with a hard on for Jonny yelling out all the time. Here are my highs and lows, cause I know you care.

Bodhisattva Blues - I don't think there's a single person alive who could not love it. Probably only a few that can spell it however.

Black Silk Ribbon - I love, but I think the live version was better. I mean Luke Bullen was playing his thigh live, that fully deserves kudos. KT and Bic belong together.

The Ties That Bind Us - Radiohead is holding Phil back. Pruddy.

Reptile - Fun.

All Comedian Suffer - It just doesn't work (sorry, I'm not all technical and clever). Kind of like eating your cereal and being dubious about the milk freshness, but you finally decide half way through it just aint right.

Girl Make Your Own Mind Up - Had Don played this at the concerts I may not have paid out on him so much. Why did we have to sit through Long Time Gone, where he attempts to fit too many words into each line, instead of this?

Little By Little - Umm. My mum taught me if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.

Hazel Black - Cool and Fun.

Over And Done - I didn't like it on first listen, but woke up with it in my head one morning and have loved it since.

Don't Forget Me - Reminded me at the start of 'This corner of the earth', but I soon forgot that and started enjoying the song. Then I started wondering why no one write a song about Rebecca. What did Sophie do that was so great?? Once I got over there being no Odes to Rebecca, its a great song.

What Could Have Been - I enjoy it when I'm listening to it but can't remember how it goes if its not playing.

3 Worlds Collide - Still deciding if I love it or hate it. I'm a bit slow. I think its love.

Too Blue - Great song, very catchy. I think Jeff write the lyrics, which if I hadn't heard somewhere I could have guessed from the line "Do you mean what you say..." which is echoed in other songs "what can't they just say what they mean". Not passing judgment, I guess he just gets really annoyed at people who beat around the bush.

Will make up my own mixed CD of live recordings and album ones. Do buy the album, it goes to a great cause, your practicaly saving the world. I'm prone to melodrama.

I agree with many of your observations there, Rebecca. A CD fairy in NZ sent the double version to me a few weeks ago, so I've had a lot of time with it. Here are some songs you didn't mention, or differing opinions.

Little By Little - I like it! It's so catchy. And it's sweet. Seeing Neil sing the entire lead in L.A. was fun, but I wish I'd known the song first for comparison.

Girl Make Your Own Mind Up - I don't think it's a bad song, but wow, it goes on for a loooong time with the same words.

Learn to Crawl - Love it

Red Wine Bottle - gets stuck in my head (which is not a bad thing)

The Cobbler - I was surprised by how much I enjoy the song. Saw it done live twice, and enjoyed it, but I really like it when the electric guitars come in at the end. Nice song, Elroy.

Over and Done - can't quite get into it.

And another shout out to Boddhisatva Blues - it is a fantastic song.
