If you buy it at best buy there is a code inside the disc package to send away for a 7" single. For Venus and Mars the single is Letting Go. You order on line and pay for shipping, 4.25 for one.

As to the actual disc Venus and Mars sounds decent. Have not heard it in 35 years or so but still remember most of the lyrics, which means I listened to it too much back then. Definately sounds like a 70's record.

So if you order both that would be another $8.50?

That is a rip imo.

The ad leads you to believe it is all in the quoted price, just like every other bonus any Best Buy-esque store has ever done.

I hope this is not a new trend. Instead of shipping store bonuses to store, making the customer shell out more just to get it.

Whilst watching "Top of the Pops - Ths Story of 1980" I heard an interesting assertion:-

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04w0fyz

The programme got to December and Lennon's death. Amongst the talking heads throughout the show was Richard Skinner, an ex Radio 1 DJ and also sort of their specialist news reporter on a twice daily (as I remember) slot called "Newsbeat". He said he woke up at 4am and heard of the shooting on the BBC World Service. He drove straight to the Newsbeat office and on arrival remembered that he had McCartneys's home phone number in his little black book. After dithering the pros and cons he decided to call and someone (not Macca) answered and he passed on the news, which they had not heard. He told them he would very much like to hear a comment from Macca if he felt like calling back to speak to him, but understood it might not be the right time. Well, he stated thata bit alter Macca did ring and although he refused to go on air, they spoke for a prolonged time about Lennon and was very upset. Then the interesting bit - Skinner says that Macca told him that he had been scheduled to meet Lennon that month to do some recordings and writing. But they had problems with booking a studio, so had rearranged to do it in January. Wow, if not the the problem with the studio booking, then Lennon would not have even been in New York at that time, and I never knew they were that close to getting back together in some form.

Just listening to Rubber Soul and re-realizing that it's really the most incredible pop album ever to happen.  Saw this thread was popping up again and thought it appropriate to share.  Just an incredible achievement in thoughtful, truthful, innovative pop music.

That seems to be one I come back to a LOT...

A. Rubber Soul

B. Revolver

C. Sgt Peppers LHCB

D. The White Album

E. Abbey Road

F. All of the above

...and then there are these, too. They really are interchangeable. Sometimes it's hard to even fathom it's the same band that went from the sounds of Rubber Soul to the White Album in three years.

Interesting. That's the 2nd time in the past month I have seen Rubber Soul listed as the #1 Beatles album. Personally, I would put all of those others (B-F) above it, but that's just me.

Yeah, same goes for me. I'd also put Magical Mystery Tour above Rubber Soul..Let It Be would be the only post Rubber Soul release that I'd rank lower. Of course all these records are amazing, so ranking them can be pretty difficult.

I would too, actually - but technically MMT isn't an album, but a double EP. Rubber Soul is probably one of their best pop albums, as opposed to the psychedelia of Sgt. P, Revolver (which itself has some lovely PPP moments) and MMT, or the more straightforward rock of the White Album and Abbey Road. They're all brilliant.

This is totally what I was referring to with my original post - I wouldn't say Rubber Soul is my favorite, or the best Beatles album.  I don't really know if there is a best Beatles album to be truthful.  The variation throughtout the years makes them hard to compare against one another.

Quoting myself...that's supposed to say "lovely *pop* moments" above. Phone auto-corrected that to PPP for some reason.

I was wondering what the hell that meant. Public-private partnership? Point-to-point protocol? :lol

Thanks for the clarification.

Edit: You should see what it lists on Urban Dictionary!

I just got the CD box set of the mono albums last year. They do sound fantastic. Not sure if I'm going to shell out $400 for this.

Made the same purchase, very happy I did.

Most likely will pass as well. As I own all original full excepting the pulled album cover I have the second printing of that.

Many were purchased at Moving sales in last 15 yrs.

I did find it interesting that the Help! and Rubber Soul discs both came with the original 1965 stereo mixes tacked on. Why just those albums?

I feel like it's getting buried here that someone is claiming Paul McCartney said he and Lennon were supposed to have been recording together at the time of Lennon's death, and if the scheduling hadn't fallen through, Lennon wouldn't even have been in NYC on 12/8/80. That's fucking insanity peppers to consider.

Agreed. I'm also going to start using that phrase, thank you.

Someone has transcribed what Mike Skinner said

http://abbeyrd.proboards.com/thread/5186/john-meant-paul-day-murdered#ixzz3OiukV4LF

I was listening to the BBC World Service and I woke up at 4am ... they were announcing John Lennon had been shot.

I leapt out of my bed and jumped into my car and drove into (BBC) Radio 1 (Newsbeat) newsroom. I suddenly see in my phone book I've got Paul McCartney's home telephone number. I thought about it, because it was kind of a nerve wracking irresponsible thing to do but I did phone the number and somebody did answer the phone.

I asked if they knew about John, and they didn't. And so I passed it on and asked could Paul phone back to Newsbeat because we would value a comment but appreciate that he may not be able to.

Suddenly one of the (office) girls came through and said "Richard! Paul McCartney on the phone. So I went to the back office, the editor's office and shut the door and had a long conversation with Paul who wouldn't go on air.

He was so upset and we talked about John and we talked about plans that, he tells me in the phone call, he and John had to get together and try and write music again together. That would have been happening that December. But the studio they wanted to use was booked out.

They didn't get together and were hoping to get together in the New Year.

So John Lennon shouldn't have even been in New York on the 8th of December

He has definitely spoken about being the first person to pass on the news to Macca before:-

- but did not mention this extra information then. Really need to hear him questioned about it further ...
