samuel70
This is great news. I'll buy them both to support the experiment and enjoy the music.Hope this will turn into something similar to LivePhish.com.
rhino4evr
which is the better show, I am leaning toward Red Rocks, as it's such a cool concert venue. At least compared to a Ballpark. I hope they release the show at Ommegang Brewery
PearlJamNoCode
It's a longshot, but I hope they release their August 2008 show from the Grand Opera House in Wilmington, DE
tangerine73
just picked up both shows.. it's a great idea a lot of others do it why not wilco.. cant wait to play them.
elephantstone
Hell yeah! 'Bout damn time they followed the livedownloads type format. Hopefully this will evolve into a bigger thing and we'll see some archival releasesagreed on all counts. i've been waiting for this day!
winterland121072
the geneva show was arguably the best show I've seen...how was 6.23.2012 red rocks?
jw harding
Phish's model is pretty good: sell soundboards to all shows, available for download about an hour after the show, plus if you bought a ticket you get a free copy. And they still allow tapers. Never heard of Pearl Jam's taping policy of not allowing external mics or whatever. Laughable. Not sure why Wilco is trying this expirement with the Geneva show though. Since it was on the radio and online, I would think quality rips of that show would be available.

tangerine73
The Allman Brothers Band policy is even weirder. They allow taping, but no online trading - only through the mail trading. this is why bands like pearl jam and now appreantly wilco are doing official bootleg's because they online trading or mail trading cirulates poor quality recordings.. I'm assuming this for wilco anyway. it's a good move for their fans.. low cost to record and release these show via roadcase and low cost for the fans.
Analogman
I have to disagree with the "poor quality recordings" statement. AUD shows sound just fine to me. Of course, depending on the type of equipment, and the experience of the taper, the quailty will be different. It's just another way for the band to make some money. Believe it or not, there are still people out there who sell bootlegs, and people who will still buy them. So I think they may be doing this as a way to kill that. I believe that is why Pearl Jam began selling live shows.
Shug
The Red Rocks show was killer, to my ears. That second encore with Casino Queen and Dreamer In My Dreams had my flying high. I downloaded last night, but there was something wrong with my connection so it took over 3 hours and I didn't get a chance to listen to it yet. And I agree, if this is something you want to continue to happen, buy a show and show the band that there is support for it. For me, I'm stoked because I don't want to do bit torrents or listen to AUD recordings or do all that trading stuff like I used to with the Dead in the days of analog cassette tapes. I know Owl and Bear is there which is fantastic, but I still haven't found the time to dig through that massive archive to find the good stuff. An easy convenient download of a good SBD is well worth $12 to me and I get to directly support the band in yet another way. I think its good karma.
linclink
Thrilled to be able to do something like this to get more high quality great Wilco material & support the band!!! Can't wait to hear these, but will have to get home from the NYC jaunt to do so...nice to look forward to between last night of NYC (7-25) & Cooperstown (7-28)!!! worldrecordplayer
Phish's model is pretty good: if you bought a ticket you get a free copy. I love that. Get home, plug in your ticket number, and for the price of admission you also have an mp3 (no flacs for free) of the show you just saw. I think it's brilliant. I've got Phish soundboards of all the shows I've attended since they started this for free. And because I think they're so generous with this policy, I'm happy to buy downloads of great shows I wasn't at. OK, I'd probably do that anyway, but still...
Maggie
I don't really need another Wilco show on my iPod, but I'll probably buy one to support the project as well. About 5 years ago I went crazy with the downloads, so it's the least I can do to say thanks for allow us to share.
sonnyfeeling
Not sure why Wilco is trying this expirement with the Geneva show though. Since it was on the radio and online, I would think quality rips of that show would be available. The compressed FM broadcast and webcast has terrible dynamic range, as well as a DJ who talked over the intro to a couple of songs. I'm happy to have a full fidelity recording.

Shug
 Listening to Red Rocks now for the first time, its sounding like a sweeeeet SBD, meaning to me crisp and clear AND a good balance between guitars, keys, drums and vocals. Just exactly perfect! This is in contrast to the recording of My Morning Jacket's 2011 Red Rocks show they sent out as part of their fan club, which sounds like an AUD or a heavily AUD matrix. You hear the distance between the stage and the mics and it sounds like very far away, which I dislike most of the time. This Wilco recording sounds like you are dead center a few rows back. Very very nice!

The Phish model is great. I like to fantasize about the day there is a Wilco channel similar to the GD channel on sirius. I'd pay the extra cash for it. Wonder why Wilco is not approved on Archive.org?
gopokes
I bought the Red Rocks album. I agree with Shug that the band sounds great. If I had any complaints, it is that the crowd is so faint. I know this is probably a characteristic of soundboard recordings, but I wish the crowd was a bit louder. For example, I love how loud the crowd gets when they yell "HATE IT" on the chorus of Hate It Here. On this "official bootleg", that energy from the crowd is absent. Still, I hope they do this for future shows so I can at least document the ones I attend.....

It's a great recording of a really great show but the audience could be louder in the mix. We sang our heads off that night and you don't get that from this recording. I noticed it most on Hate It Here and Hummingbird. Having said that I'm extremely grateful for such a high quality recording. Much to my neighbors dismay I can create my own loud audience sing along at home.

But I'm not complaining, I am so glad Wilco is doing this and I have and will purchase the downloads to show my support.
rhino4evr
I am about halfway through the Red Rocks show, it's really good so far. I am so glad they are doing this. Tempted to get the ballpark show, but I think I may wait to see what others come available before doing so.
smells like flowers
Just bought the Red Rocks show. Got a little chill during the first few seconds of Misunderstood -- it took me right back to last week's fabulous shows. This is just the medicine I need to cure me of my post-Wilco-trifecta blues! (Agree with previous posters that the audience could be louder, but oh well.) Otherwise, it's perfection.
i'm only sleeping
Too bad these downloads are not available to Wilco fans outside the USA
