  1. Did anyone catch the Rogers Waters set? Sounds like it was a one-of-a-kind event.
  2. A few more Zappa recommendations: Toad-O Line (aka On the Bus) - One of Frank's best known examples of what he dubbed "xenochrony," where tracks from one recording are combined with a different one. The original solo can be found elsewhere but this rhythm section really makes it. Po-Jama People - What can I say about this fabulous elixir? This is some of the most unhinged studio FZ soloing of all time. Muffin Man - Tacked onto a studio track of vocals, this got big air play on AOR stations in New England back in the good old days. Dupree's Paradise, 5/8/74 - Probably the most essential
  3. This was the first thing I thought of when I saw the title of this thread. Check out the Helsinki concert for the original unedited solo. Fun stuff. Other candidates: Hendrix - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - That descending riff at the end never gets old. Bruce Cockburn - Water Into Wine - Technically a song, not just a solo. Incredible finger picking. Hard to believe it's one person, not overdubbed. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7qyK4fzbF3w Jerry Garcia - Chinacat Sunflower > I Know You Rider, Grateful Dead, Europe '72 - These are definitive versions, and the solos are a big reason
  4. That reminds me: 3/11/99, Tower Records, Chicago. Some of my favorite versions of Summerteeth tunes - really rocking.
  5. This is what I was thinking too.Did no one on here catch the Tweedy show at Forecastle? Surprised there has been no thread or setlist.
  6. Awesome. I was hoping a recording might surface, but having a soundboard is always much preferred. This show rocked, too. Check it out, everybody.
  7. Review (not mine): https://noisey.vice.com/blog/wilco-chicago-pitchfork-review-essay
  8. I can't believe how many people are ranking Star Wars above Being There. Wow.
  9. Ditto for me. I don't even care about having video, I just want the audio. Missed the first couple tunes, which was a bummer.
  10. My wife is from Thailand, and I've been over there a few times. It's quite a bit more modern these days (iPhones and iPads, an excellent elevated rail system in Bangkok, etc), but I know what you mean. Will be retiring there eventually, and look forward to the mellow vibe and happy people. We'll be fairly far north, so Laos is now on my bucket list. I think it would be quite an interesting place to see.
  11. ST YHF BT AGIB SW TWL AM SBS W(TA)
  12. Now the rest of the set can be What's Your 20? highlights but none of us will complain.
  13. Kind of an underwhelming pick, based on setlist alone. But maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. Anyone familiar with the show?
  14. The rockingest stuff on this reminds me of Let's Not Get Carried Away and Dark Neon, which I have filed on iTunes under Sky Blue Sky and Wilco The Album, respectively. Those also happen to be my favorite tunes from those eras. I mean, remember when SBS came out? By that point, when was the last time we heard Jeff scream in a song? Nobody in their right mind is going to be calling Star Wars "dad rock," are they? I mean, most of it rocks pretty hard.
  15. I feel a little bit of I Might in Random Name Generator, but it's way better than I Might. They took some real chances here, and hit a home run. I'm floored. And excited. It's better than I could have hoped for, and the surprise free drop makes it even better. This thing kicks ass. It's weird as shit, which pleases me no end.
  16. No freaking kidding, how did they get through SS without even road testing a single track? I just found out about this from a friend of mine posting to my Facebook timeline. Still anxiously awaiting the email link. Been a rough couple weeks, and this is just what the doctor ordered!
  17. Nice to see some more Zappa love here. I was just silently lamenting how few people had him on their Favorite Guitarist lists. He used to play Octandre a lot with the Mothers.
  18. Billie Holiday too. Discovered her in my 20s. Edit: Bessie Smith still holds up as well. "Aggravatin' Papa" popped into my head today just like any pop tune might.
  19. ^^This is my feeling exactly.
  20. I always hate to see unadulterated criticism of Steal Your Face (e.g., "Steal Your Money"). Sure, it kind of sucks overall, but there are a few great versions of songs on there: Promised Land, Cold Rain & Snow and Mississippi Half-Step are all great, IMHO. Maybe it would be worth seeking out other copies of the boards that those shows come from, but I don't know. Always loved 'em. The rest of it is kind of "meh," but I always thought those three tunes made it a worthwhile thing to have. I do agree with the suggestions to any newbie to the Dead's vast catalogue: American Beauty, Workingma
  21. Well, Lady Antebellum was a younger crowd, but mostly country - more beer than bud.
