Just binged the 4 episodes of My Life as a Rolling Stone that were made available on BBC iPlayer as the first went out on air. Each of an hour focusing on the 4 individuals. Mick - bit bland

I really wish they would've stopped when Charlie died. Steve Jordan is a good drummer but he is wrong for the Stones. He doesn't swing. & Keith is losing it on guitar. His guitar signal is so proc

Happy 80th birthday to Keith!

Interesting set list. I couldn't help but notice there's nothing from the 80s in that set, not that there should be. But it's like that decade doesn't even exist for the band. And Out Of Control? Hell, I had to look that one up - never bought "Bridges".

Good to see Start Me Up later in the set, instead of its usual position. There's probably at least another dozen tunes that could be included in a "hits" set like this one! Hopefully they'll mix things up a bit for the other shows.

Start Me Up was released in 1981 on Tattoo You. So there is something from the 80's. Also, Chuck implies that the band will not be mixing it up which makes sense for a 5 show "tour": http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/rolling-stones-chuck-leavell-on-assembling-their-reunion-set-list-20121126

For Chicago-area Stones fans

The Stones-Muddy gig was caught on film, and “Muddy Waters and the Rolling Stones Live” will be shown at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (with a repeat at 10) on WTTW-Channel 11.

Just read Hoekstra's article - it's a good one.

Never seen the film before, look forward to watching it. I ventured into the Checker Board lounge once (the Hyde Park location) during an off hour (early evening) and talked to Thurman once - he was grouchy.

Sadly I was a dork and never went to the original Checkerboard, which was in the hood, which the new one is not (Hyde Park is a nice neighborhood, don't get me wrong.) I have never seen this either.

I find it interesting that the top two threads at the moment are the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Followed in close succession by the Who, Neil Young and the Dead.

Still alot of interest in the dinosaur groups.

edit- In fact on the music discussions every group mentioned is over ten years old including the Lips and the Black Crowes. Somehow I miss the VC buzz band discussions of yesteryear. Could it be that there simplyl arent that many interesting new bands or is the VC demograhic aged out of interest in bands that catch our attention for a year or two or three and then disappear?

HA! I was waiting on that! It's true that the song came out in '81, but in fact the origins of the tune go back into the 70s (as a reggae tune, IIRC). So we're both right. :thumbup

Well imo there's just almost nothing "new" that remotely sounds interesting to me. But I like what I like, and it seems that that 'style' is no longer fashionable.

I think all the songs on that album were left-over songs.

Yeah. I read somewhere that the germ of "Waiting on a Friend" goes back as far as Sticky Fingers.

Not to get into old fogey territory here, but even a few years ago I still bought quite a few albums by new artists and even new albums by old artists, but I find that at my advancing age that i buy way way more old material, both by living and dead artists than ever before. So I poped for the new Dylan and Cohen and while both are pretty good, they clearly sound like guys at the ends of their careers. I also recently bought a whole bunch of CDs by kids of famous artists (Thompson, Guthrie, Jennings, etc) and found these offspring to lack any distinctive voice of their own. We all know what passes for music on the radio these days. And while musicians have never been better technically, style wise there is nothing striking about much out there.

Having read the Grateful Dead article in the New Yorker and giving a passing notice to the 50 year shows by the Beach Boys and the Stones, it sure seems weird out there. I started a thread about where are the musicians today that will still have significant careers in 50 years and some misinterpreted what I was after. Some musicians were mentioned who I doubt will even be remembered 5 years from now, much less 50. I find myself paying attention to Taylor Swift and even watched some of her vids the other day (check out the vid for ":Mean" sometime, it is actually quite entertaining.) because I can stomach her, whereas many other contemporary recording artists seem incapable of keeping my interest for even 5 minutes.

I think it is really nice that the Stones asked back the old members. It only seems fair to ask Wyman and Mick Taylor back for an encore.

edit- Some intrepid long term VCer needs to collate a list of all the buzz bands we used to talk about here, including the Pernice Brothers, The Wrens, The Decemberists (still slightly buzzing I guess), and all the others. So many have fallen out of the music business.

double edit- Just ignore my rantings. After all I am the guy who thought the Stones should have packed it in after Black and Blue.

I am bored at work today, so I went back to 2006 to see who was being talked about in this forum. Some of the names are still around:

Andrew Bird

Portastatic

Voxtrot

Ben Kweller

Augie March

Tim Easton

Ted Leo

Richard Buckner

Calexico

Rhett Miller

M Ward

Neko Case

Aimee Mann

New Pornographers

belle and sebastian

Pretty dire result, IMHO. I'd say out of that list, the ones I hear about most often on here are Neko, M. Ward and Aimee Mann. Interestingly, it seems like the artists with the most "legs" on VC are solo acts, not bands. The only one out of that bunch who I have gravitated toward is Augie March. They have a couple decent albums. Unfortunately, I more or less lost interest after a short while. Maybe I'll give them another listen this weekend.

Meanwhile, if someone as great as the Beatles or the Stones comes along, I will be happy to check them out!

Edit: A (much) younger co-worker of mine turned me onto The Kills. Pretty decent stuff, very influenced by Royal Trux. No commercial potential. :lol

Of your list clearly Andrew Bird and Neko (some of my personal faves) have hit the big time, although Neko's star has faded some of late.

You forgot my favorite which is the Perneice Brothers (maybe you figured I mentioned them already) which even at the time I said would not last (even though they sounded good.)Ted Leo, Richard Buckner,Calexico, Rhett Miller, M Ward have all had staying power to me, but all with the possible exception of M. Ward are nearing the end of their normal shelf life. (Okay Calexico has some staying power I suppose, but when they have veered from the SW moody stuff they lost me.) (Augie March needed a better stage name in the first place, but his literary name is slightly better than the too clever by half Kurt Vile.) I know there are several others which were hot and now forgotten like that Josh whats his name. Meadowlands was a great album, but there was only one of them.

Obviously there will never be another Beatles, Stones, Dylan because they ended up there first so they are bound to be remembered. Rock as a musical genre has now passed into history, but not as far as jazz, which had Armstrong, Ellington, Monk, Parker, Davis, and Coltrane: leaving still brilliant musicans, but no figures of their stature. I guess it is natural. There are plenty of guitarists, some mere kids, who could kick the long dead, but now 70 year old Hendrix's ass, but there will never be another Hendrix. He got there first.

anyone know what the 'skinny mother fucker rocker diet' consists of? i need to get on that so i still look good at age 70!

I don't know but sign me up and I am not even overweight. Hopefully not diet pills. Lots of excersise I would say.

So maybe they are the Jay Ferguson, Norman Greenbaum, Mungo Jerry, Paper Lace and Buffy Saint-Marie of their times? Do they at least have any hits? I honestly don't know...

what the hell are hits??? No one has hits anymore. Ferguson had a run with Spirit, Mungo Jerry and Paper Lace were one hit wonders, but Buffy Saint-Marie was a different artist (in more ways than one) and still has a cult following. Indie rock figures don't have hits. If they did they would lose all cachet; you know that old timer......

i miss the days of popular music. i think it expanded everyones horizons. some argue the opposite.

there aint no such thing as an overnight sensation anymore.

God, we totally hijacked this Stones thread. Sorry, everybody...

As well you should be. Shame on you Mike & Lou! ;)

But...my .02: y'all didn't mention Califone - imho the best band I've came across since I joined here in Feb. '06. God, I love that band.
