Jeff Tweedy — 18 April 2019, Champaign, IL (Virginia Theatre)

Great recap by Paul as usual. I was happy to be able to make this last show of the tour. The Warm/Warmer songs might not get played in any serious way for a while and they are too good not to make the drive. The observation about Jeff seeming happier to talk than play is on point, but when he played he hit his marks. His guitar playing was incredible, he nailed all the lyrics and, even while professing to have caught a cold that day, you couldn't hear it in his voice. While this tour may have been long, a well rehearsed Jeff is a real treat to see. There just aren't many performers at this -

Can you tell the story of how the performance came to be? Did he ask you to join him? Did you rehearse? !! -
In addition to Solid Sound, Bbop reported the following from the Chattanooga show in his write up: "he also took a moment to comment on how they had pressed 5,000 copies for Record Store Day because they thought it would be nice for people to actually go out to an independent record store and buy a record, but then "everybody complained (about not being able to get a copy)," Jeff said. "Oh, I'm so sorry we conservatively estimated how many people would buy our record. ... Didn't you hear that nobody buys records anymore?" Then he conceded what those who didn't manage to track down a copy this

For those of us lucky enough to score a copy...it's weird only having it on Vinyl, right? I would like to listen to it on my commute/at work but it is on my turntable at home! Of course, I'm sure, smarter people than I have converted it to digital by now... It will be interesting to see what the Warm + Warmer package ends up looking like. Will it include additional tracks? Will it be Warmest?

Wow! Sounds great. What a moment. Congrats. -
Ah, missed that. Thanks. Very interesting. Same sort of effect on ...and Then You Cut It in Half too on 4th listen.
-
Sounds like slide guitar or pedal steel on 'ten sentences' ? Probably slide - I don't think of Jeff as being big into that sound or playing it.

Yes, lots of familiar references in these lyrics. Alas, the music/song itself isn't on the LP, just Jeff's lyrics on the back cover. Jeff is credited as a musician on the record, but the credits don't break out which song and on first listen I didn't pick up on any vocals/other parts that "had to be" Jeff. It's a solid Minus 5 album.

I picked up Stroke Manor by The Minus 5 at RSD today. Lyrics from the song Jeff Tweedy wrote for Scott McCaughey are printed on the back cover: Oh once upon a time I met a good man A fellow both fresh and young I'd try to tell you but I still don't understand How he knows every song ever sung Let's go play, let's go play again Let's go play, rock and roll again Once I woke him up on a Tuesday A Tuesday that we all know We watched the news and we cried all day And then we made rock and roll He said, let's go play, let's go play again Come let's play, rock and roll again

This was impossible to track down!

Bummed to see all these strike outs. I scored at the second store I went to. 3.5 hours of work. I was hoping my wife would be able to pick up a copy for a VCer but the person in front of her took that store's last copy. It's a great album on first listen. Hard not to hear it as a companion to Warm even if one tried. I've heard a bunch of these live solo and they are good. Hadn't heard Empty Head before just now and it is among the best of Warmer.

Family Ghost is pretty great! I'm not sure I recognize the T-Rex in it that NPR references. Also, hadn't seen Jeff's comments from the press release: "At some point I separated the songs from the WARM/WARMER session into two records with individual character," Tweedy says in a press release announcing the album. "But still tried to keep the overall tone and texture of the combined session consistent. In a lot of ways these two records could have been released as a double LP. WARMER means as much to me as WARM and might just as easily have been released as the first record of the pair."

Nice YouTube solo acoustic performances of Sick Server & New Madrid. Hadn't seen this posted yet. https://mountainx.com/multimedia/acoustic-asheville-jeff-tweedy/

RSD contest for autographed copy: https://recordstoreday.com/Contest/4330 features the language it's coming out first on Record Store Day which is a hopeful sign that the music will be available beyond the 5000 copies

That 2003 setlist is bonkers! -
The Sound Opinions show this past weekend featured a best of live performances on the show. Most were from the last 3-5 years with the wonderful exception of She's a Jar from 1999 performed by Jay and Jeff. It was great. Some great banter ahead of the performance too. Tying it to this thread (beyond the fact that they were promoting the album) is my thought of how the rest of the band felt about these two being so chummy and promoting the cd without them so effectively.
