solace
yeah, similiar thing when Intervention went up on iTunes as well also, the fade out on this single version better be just that, a single only thing
Elixir Sue
yeah, similiar thing when Intervention went up on iTunes as well also, the fade out on this single version better be just that, a single only thing Is it bad? I haven't downloaded it from iTunes yet...
Synthesizer Patel
What's wrong with those lyrics? I just think they're naff. I normally believe him to be quite a good lyricist alot of the time, but this sounds like something (as someone pointed out on another forum) Rik from The Young Ones would have written. Plus it's an over-simplification. Plus it's just trite.
Elixir Sue
I finally downloaded it...I'm thinking the fade-out's probably not "single only," considering there are several other White Stripes songs that end that way: The Air Near My Fingers, Hello Operator, Forever For Her...to name a few off the top of my head. solace
it's such a long/boring fade... ugh... fades
Sir Stewart
it's such a long/boring fade... ugh... fades Sometimes they save you from experiencing noodling and wankery.
DrNo
wow definitely not what i was expected but it fucking rocks... gotta get used to the little electronic bagpipe part in the middle It's actually just a primitive synth from what I understand. The same one used on "Telstar," in fact. I think I read that on pitchfork, maybe?
explodo
That bagpipe thing makes it sound kind of like music from an N.E.S. game. I like the music....would be hundreds of times better if Jack didn't sing, actually.
tongue-tied
what bagpipe? i'm pretty sure the bagpipe mentioned in the press is gonna be on the irishy tune "prickly thorn but sweetly worn".
Orkie
Bagpipes? Guitar? It's a fucking synth.
bobbob1313
Bagpipes? Guitar? It's a fucking synth. What are your feelings on the last White Stripes album? I've been wondering.
MrRain422
I've heard bagpipes referenced for some other songs, but not this one. I still haven't heard it, so I can't judge for myself, but I can believe it's a bagpipe, I can believe it is a guitar, but there is no way chance that it is a synth. I am certain of this without hearing it.
ction
I just listened to "Blue Orchid" for the first time in probably a year, and I don't get the hate. Not their best song, mind you, but still fun to listen to.
solace
it's not bad, but it so doesn't fit the overall vibe of the album and as a result sticks out like a sore thumb (ie: obvious single). shoulda been held over for a diff album or released as a b-side imo. plus like i said above, the lyrics are lame imo... musically it's fine
ction
but it so doesn't fit the overall vibe of the album and as a result sticks out like a sore thumb Yeah, I guess you're right now that I'm listening to the rest of that record. It would have actually been a good candidate for a non-album single (remember when bands used to do those?) that could have come out a couple of months before the new album. "Apparently, there's no piano on the album, but there is a synthesizer on the song "Icky Thump", which happens to be the same synthesizer used on the Tornados' legendary "Telstar"." http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news...humpi-tracklist
Analogman
same synthesizer used on the Tornados' legendary "Telstar"too early for a synthesizer
jimtweedy1977
"Icky Thump" is up on itunes now. Not the album, just the song

virtualreason
I kinda get a "99 Problems" vibe during the verses. Anyone else feeling that too?

solace
Liz, you're right, the :14 fade is on the album version according to the promo single
Elixir Sue
Thought so. Well, I'm not too bothered about it...I like "Icky Thump" (and the fade doesn't ruin it for me), but I'm thinking it won't end up being one of my favorites on the album. I have high hopes. solace
agreed. great song, but better not be one of the better songs on the record by any means. the fade doesn't ruin it, but it'd be better without it.
rwrkb
i've been digging the song quite a bit, and the new QOTSA song is sick (no pun intended) as well. can't wait for june!
