solace
wasn't overly impressed by their performances (song selection didn't help), but it was great seeing them on SNL! and yeah, the horns definitely do make both songs WAY better than their studio counterparts. Jeff's suit was definitely hilarious/awesome
hh44
Say it's your birthday...well it's my birthday too, yeah Lorne Michaels finally got a Beatles song on SNL, or at least the chorus of Hate It Here aping the Birthday riff, but if you gotta rip someone off it may as well be the Beatles. 'Twas still a great performance.
tongue-tied
I just watched it this morning and thought that was sweet. Really only something us fanaticals would pick up on. ...or his wife.
Willkoman
Missed SNL (whew!) but caught "The" band this morning. Thanks for the links folks.

'Twas still a great performance. "Birthday" was exactly the first thing i thought about when i heard the pre-release stream of the song last year.a great song to pay homage to. Walken was awesome, as always. The horns really add to the last big bangs.
BornToRun86
I love Jeff's Obama button the same night that Hillary came on. What a badass.
jakobnicholas
I was disapppointed. Wilco, the coolest band ever, looked and sounded anything but. The songs they chose fit nicely in the canon of Wilco songs and fit nicely in the context of the band's histroy and what they've become, but to pick those 2 songs, really sucked in my opinion. Walken has a great kicker, but the song is so damned wierd and clunky and awkward....much like Tweedy looked in his suit. Hate it Here was "pleasant", nothing more. The only song off Sky Blue Sky that would have been a worse choice to play would have been Shake It Off. Even Leave Me Like Me Like You Found Me would have been better......I'd rather have seen Jeff's sensitive side than his don't-know-what-to-do-while-you're-gone-side. I was so hoping they'd rip into one older song, like Always in Love or Monday or Casino Queen or I'm a Wheel.....something to show their muscle and swagger. They looked and sounded like older rock, Steely-Dan-type, guys last night. Wilco's still awesome. They're still the greatest. But I have a feeling many who tuned in to SNL don't feel the same. lamradio
FYI - Audio doesn't work if you use Windows Media player. Haven't tried it in another player yet, but I'm sure it works with Divx.
Lammycat
I'd think doing two songs (separated by a lengthy break, too) has to affect the performance a bit. When you're given a time allotment I'd imagine it detracts from the spontaneity/vibe of a tune a bit, too. I agree that they weren't stand-out versions of either tune and that they were merely pleasantly done. Nothing wrong with that, though. I imagined "Hate it Here" would be done before it started as it's been sounding great with the horns and agree that an older nugget would have been nice as a follow-up tune, but certainly understand why they'd do "Walken." Nothing wrong with putting your latest efforts from your latest album out for all to see in this opportunity.
Hixter
FYI - Audio doesn't work if you use Windows Media player. Haven't tried it in another player yet, but I'm sure it works with Divx. It definitely works with VLC, the best media player in existence. Free, cross-platform, open source and it plays just about anything. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Beltmann
Wilco's still awesome. They're still the greatest. But I have a feeling many who tuned in to SNL don't feel the same.I'll be honest... I enjoyed both performances, but I too wondered about how they might play for the uninitiated. For example, Wilco fans know that Tweedy has a dry, ironic sense of humor, so the suit plays into that, and we think it's winking fun... but I wonder how many viewers just thought it looked lame? moxiebean
SNL should've axed the last Ellen Page lesbian skit (which was A: really unfunny, even given the post-oscars is-she-or-isn't-she speculation and B: might've been edgy 10 years ago but just seems dated now) & let wilco do 12 minutes of Spiders. H.Stone
Non-Wilco fans in the live and viewing audiences are certainly not going to feel for them what most of us feel for them based on the SNL performances. But I suspect they chose their songs based on what they really like to play together and feel is a good snapshot of the band. And am I the only one who believes Tweedy actually digs that suit? No "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" intended when he wears it? I dig it.
eddiedillon839
I don't know if this was mentioned on anyone else's post, but at the very end of the show when everyone is on stage, did anyone else see Nels just standing in the front looking lost.
andshewas
Walken has a great kicker, but the song is so damned wierd and clunky and awkward....much like Tweedy looked in his suit. You must not understand his sense of humor. I can't believe that seeing him wear his Nudie suit doesn't make you smile. My parents taped the show for me, so I'll see SNL the next time I go home to see them [probably this week, because one of my braces brackets fell off]. :dancing
Sir Stewart
I don't know if this was mentioned on anyone else's post, but at the very end of the show when everyone is on stage, did anyone else see Nels just standing in the front looking lost.I did notice that he was about the height of two full Ellen Pages.A dull mess of skits, except:- Smiegel's Obama/Jesse/Sharpton cartoon - I was rolling. The Wayans Brothers in Podiums. - Fred Armisen's comedian character on the news was hilarious - he is quite a talent. "It's just...I mean...I have three cousins?" radiokills
the cartoon was the dumbest thing ive ever seen. why is snl so mediocre
Dreamin'
Wilco fans know that Tweedy has a dry, ironic sense of humor, so the suit plays into that, and we think it's winking fun... but I wonder how many viewers just thought it looked lame?Or thought it was an homage to Mike Mills. (Those suits really are beautiful works of art.)

They looked and sounded like older rock, Steely-Dan-type, guys last night. no offense, but you're pretty damn clueless. Have you watched SNL before? Musical guests almost always (especially up and coming bands like Wilco) play their latest releases or singles. Yes Wilco is "up and coming in a sense" they arent playing arenas and arent considered a classic artist which is probably the rare occassion where the musical guest would play an older tune. Most bands on SNL dont sound or look great. I love Phish and Arcade Fire, their SNL performances were definately awkward and mediocre at best. Take it for what it was, cool to see one of your favorite bands on national TV. If you really expected to see Always in Love or Monday, i just dont know what to tell you
theashtraysays
- Fred Armisen's comedian character on the news was hilarious - he is quite a talent. "It's just...I mean...I have three cousins?"Yeah, that one was pretty funny. Kinda along the lines of Gilda Radner's Roseanne Rosanadana (sp?) for us old timers, but pretty funny. And Walken was the better of the two songs played. I think it shows more of the band's creativity than Hate it Here. Nels is the only guy I've ever seen who can get an aerobic workout sitting in a chair playing lap guitar...
