EL the Famous
Not only is Van Halen a better band than the Velvet Underground, they are way more culturally and musically influential and important. VU is a band a musician will say influenced them...van halen is a band that actually influenced musicians (especially guitarists).
PotKettleTug
Ijust thought of one going thru my cd's... What is ther big deal w/ Graham Parons? He doesn't do much for me, some of his songs sound like something in a bad 70's movie. November rain is the finest rock ballad ever written.

mountain bed
Those "Pickin' On..." bluegrass tribute cds are good, in general. You haven't lived until you hear "Astronomy Domine" done with acoustic guitar, upright bass, mandolin and violin.

PopTodd
The original (Brinsley Schwarz) version of "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?" is superior to the more-famous Elvis Costello version.

jff
I'd rather listen to Huey Lewis and the News than almost anything I've heard on college radio in the last decade.

Whitty
Is it safe to say we've collectively hated every major artist in rock history in this thread? Nearly everything that Pitchfork declares to be the latest and greatest trend or genre-defying masterpiece was already done by David Bowie in the 1970's.
moxiebean
David Bowie doesn't have an original creative bone in his body - he's appropriated his entire career from anyone who's crossed his radar, from Marcel Duchamp to Klaus Nomi.
Mr. Heartbreak
Musical blasphemy I truly believe: 1) Frank Zappa is the most important musical figure of the 20th century.2) The entire punk movement was a joke: a bunch of no-talent douchebags who couldn't play their instruments worth a damn. That includes the Clash, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols ... all of them. Enthusiasm does not equal talent.3) Elvis Costello sucks balls.4) Early 70s Elton holds up better than early 70s Bowie.5) The Replacements are boring as fuck.6) Springsteen is a talented writer, but that's about it. Patti Smith's version of Because the Night and Manfred Mann's version of Blinded By the Light eclipse anything Bruce ever did himself.7) Warren Zevon > Bruce Springsteen8) 99.9% of indie rock sucks donkey dong. All these semi-obscure bands, Arcade Fire, the Decemberists, Bright Eyes, Spoon, blah blah blah. None of them are anywhere close to being in the same league as the Beatles, the Stones, or the Mothers. Even the new wave bands of the 80s were better than these shmucks.9) Clapton hasn't done anything worth a damn since about 1974, and even before that he was pretty rinky-dink.10) Rap is not music, and does not belong in a thread about music. Even atonal music has melody and/or harmony; rap has only a rhythm section. It should be spelled
