Very good piece.  For a number of years, they were my best band in the land.  Recently watched Stopped Making Sense again, which brought all that back for me.  Interesting he can't identify Byrne by name. Doesn't seem like there's been any lessening of the bitterness.

Yes, that is a great read. Thanks for the link.

There are several great acts mentioned along the thread who are deserving of the hall.  Warren Zevon is my personal favorite.  He'll never make it and I suspect one of the reasons why is just what Chris Frantz was talking about.  He never had a great team.  Actually, he probably had numerous great teams behind him but he was so impossible to work with he couldn't keep them.

That's a good point. I remember reading the Warren Zevon biography and being a little disenchanted to find out what a selfish prick he could be. His personal life was a train wreck. I know you can chalk a lot of that up to booze, drugs and insecurity, and it doesn't diminish my enjoyment of his music, but on the other hand it doesn't elevate him in my estimation. As an aside, that's one of the reasons I love Wilco so much--pretty much everything I know about the personal life and values of Jeff Tweedy and the rest of the guys just reinforces my admiration. In Warren Zevon's case, it fights with it.

It's good to see SRV on the list.

The nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 2015 class include Nine Inch Nails, Lou Reed, The Smiths, Green Day, Kraftwerk, N.W.A., Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Chic, Sting, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bill Withers, War, The Spinners, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and The Marvelettes. The top five vote-getters will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in April 2015. Voting is now open at RollingStone.com.

This marks the first year Nine Inch Nails and Green Day are eligible, as both of their respective debuts were released in 1989. Lou Reed and Sting were both previously inducted as members of The Velvet Underground and The Police, however both musicians are now up for induction as solo artists.

I'm heading to Cleveland this weekend for the Browns-Steelers game. My expectations aren't high, but I'm looking forward to seeing the RnR and football halls of fame for the first time.

I'm also going to pay a visit to my great-great-great-great-grandfather's grave in Akron. He was buried there in 1857.

I have never been to the RnR HOF, but I did recently go to the EMP museum in Seattle.  That was extremely interesting.  Not only a lot of music stuff, but pop culture and scifi too.   Well worth it if you are in Seattle.

I love the EMP. Been there a couple of times.

I do not think Phish is HOF material.

My top five on that list would be Nine Inch Nails, Lou Reed, The Smiths, Kraftwerk, N.W.A.

Absolutely, without question.  Whatever the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is, and whatever the criteria is or should be, Phish should and will be in.  First ballot HOF'ers in my book.

I honestly don't see it.  There was a time in my life where I went to a ton of Phish shows and listened to everyone of their albums, and traded bootlegs of various shows.  I loved Phish.  Though truth be told I grew out of that phase in my life.

In short they are a great band.   But HOF material?  The eligibility requirements are vague and subjective (even more so then sports and other HOFs).  I suppose we could argue and argue if they are or are not and never change anyone's mind.

But let's play the game of picking the top five out of this years nominees, assuming you see Phish as HOF worthy, who you gonna leave out of your top 5?

For me my top 5 would be:  NIN, NWA, the Smiths, Lou Reed, and Kraftwerk.  There is no way Phish has a greater influence or better body of work then those 5.

Well,  NIN, Kraftwerk, and The Smiths all blow. Besides, no one has really even heard any of "Kraftwerks" tunes before. Or any tunes by NIN, come to think of it, besides that tune "Hurt" (that Johnny Cash did a nice job on) or that one where they're like la la la "help me" la la la. So, hard to have a serious discussion about the merit of one band being more "influential" or having a "better" body of work over another when no one has even heard the music of some of these "bands".
