  1. I agree with a few folks that Aerosmith's opening, with the giant curtain hiding the entire stage, was memorable. Saw it for the first time in '84 when they reunited for the Back in the Saddle tour, and they opened with that song. When the curtain dropped, the place went bonkers. Other memorable openings: Bob Dylan at Roseland in NYC in the '90s - opened with Jokerman. He voice sounded so clear you knew it was going to be a great show. Wilco at Irving Plaza in NYC in 1997 - opened with Misunderstood. First time seeing them, and the first song was raucous. The Rolling Stones at Foxbor
  2. I agree that this is some of their best early footage. Would have loved to have been there!
  3. Just catching up on this thread, and this made me chuckle.
  4. Great thread - makes me think how much I have enjoyed this summer. Went to Solid Sound with 3 pre-teens and an old friend. Celebrated 15 years of marriage. Took my 4 kids and a neighbor to their first game at Fenway. And all 4 kids loved it - right to the end of the four-hour game. Swam often in Pleasant Lake in Casco, Maine. Saw King Lear performed onstage. Started coaching my fourth season of high school golf yesterday. A summer rather short on accomplishments and long on fun.
  5. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/dailypitch/post/2011/07/ubaldo-jimenez-trades-to-cleveland-indians/1 Looks like Ubaldo Jimenez is going to the Indians. Might be paying a pretty high price, but the guy can be a dominant #1 starter. Just he hasn't done it for the past year.
  6. This makes me very very sad that I did not have one at SSF. Or two.
  7. Thank you for the heads up! Ordered Autumn Defense and Paul Weller.
  8. Dale Murphy was a guest on Jim Rome's radio show today. Jim asked him about his blog, and what bands he listens to these days. Murphy said that Wilco was his favorite. They cued up a bit of Heavy Metal Drummer in the background. Later, Dale said he also listens to The Decemberists, Arcade Fire, and Kurt Vile. Dale talked about the great music that is out there now, and that without the influence of his kids (8 of them), he would still be listening to America and 70s classic rock. Interesting take, especially coming from a 55 year-old.
  9. To both of you - cool idea! Charles, you got two of my daughters in your Wilco shirt shots. Thank you for taking their pictures - they think they are celebrities now!
  10. Link to Pollstar Story on Stage Collapse at Ottawa Bluesfest Looks like more injured than first reported. Scary stuff.
  11. This was really hard to limit to a somewhat standard-length show. Would probably add in several more songs off "The Whole Love", as that is what I want to hear live now. I put in two that have been played, and two that are intriguing in terms of length/little bits of description we have read. 1. Misunderstood 2. She's A Jar 3. You Are My Face 4. I Might 5. Far Far Away 6. Kamera 7. Country Disappeared 8. Casino Queen 9. Art of Almost 10. Ashes of American Flags 11. Theologians 12. Sunken Treasure 13. One Sunday Morning (Song For Jane Smiley's Boyfriend) 14. Secret of the Sea 15. Impossible G
  12. "One Wing" at a Hannaford grocery store in Yarmouth, Maine, yesterday afternoon.
  13. 1. Got into UT just as they ended their run. Bought AM when it came out. Became a huge fan when Being There came out. Remember hearing Misunderstood on a bootleg cassette of Being There a month or two before it came out and it blew me away. 2. February, 1997, NYC, on the Being There tour. The Deli Tray show. Ended up with some lettuce and tomato on me when the contents of the tray flew into the crowd. If I remember right, Jeff crowd-surfed, then said that was the first time he had ever done that (maybe the last time, too).
  14. Some folks just know how to write a eulogy. I guess Bruce is one of them. That is truly moving.
  15. I sure hope my favorites got their blood transfusions recently. If not, they don't have a chance.
  16. Love both, but have a preference for SG. I do think it has to do with the production of the song - the sound is pure pop bliss.
  17. There is so much to see and do at the Solid Sound Festival, so everyone experiences different things. I would love to hear highlights from other attendees (other than the love for the cowbell-playing guitar tech). Here are a few of mine: -The dunk tank. Only went from 2-2:30 PM on Sat., but it was a treat. A female volunteer got dunked multiple times, then a guy who was a lawyer went next (maybe Wilco's lawyer, as Jeff knew him). Sam Tweedy got dunked by Jeff (many times), then Spencer Tweedy got dunked many, many times by Jeff and other members of his family (Sam, Jeff's sister and nephew
  18. Agree totally with the first part. And yes, the "decision" circus earned Lebron the enmity of many fans. I generally do not like rooting against someone, but if hubris is involved, I can do it much easier. And I love the last part of your post! Let's hope it stays that way for many years.
  19. So sorry to hear about all you are going through. It sounds rough in your world right now. A weekend with Wilco might be a good thing - a sonic shoulder, you know? It can be hard to camp with kids alone, but I wonder if bringing the kids might be a good thing, particularly if they have been looking forward to it. I am bringing three (ages 12, 12, and 8) solo. Just a wonder. My heart goes out to you and your children.
  20. Great choices! The above from your list are some of my favorite Dylan songs. Happy Birthday, Bob!
