Mr. Kinsley
I didn't think they were bad at all, I'm just disappointed by the "safe" (as someone else put it) song choices. Actually, Walken was fine, it's Hate It Here I was iffy on. If you're going to stick to new stuff, why not You Are My Face or Impossible Germany? At least they didn't play Stink It Up or Suck It Out or whatever that one crappy-ass song is. And the suit ruled!!!
markosis
why not You Are My Face I was hoping they were gonna do that one. And how it devolves into a bunch of noise at the end, it would have been a nice little bit of weirdness to scare the normals with.

I think they did great. I can't imagine anyone seeing that performance of Walken and not being impressed/ wanting to check out some of their stuff . But I guess I'm biased. DAngerer09
I agree Walken was a good choice, but they should have also played You Are My Face or just went back and played something older. I'm The Man Who Loves You (even though I know a ton of people on this board are sick of it) would have been great with horns- that song would no doubt hook people who don't know Wilco. When The Shins were on, they played a new song, and then played New Slang from their first record. I think Wilco should have followed the new song-old song model. sky blue bats
you all are all crazy! if you do not like Wilco then stop writing on this board!! SNL kicked ass!!
kidsmoke
At the risk of sounding like one of those Wilco-can-do-no-wrong types, I have to say that I was pretty satisfied with all of it, given the limitations of the show's format. I saw the band as I know them, relaxed and having a good time, and I truly don't care who gets it or doesn't. The songs left me with a huge smile, and maybe some other listeners who didn't know them had the same reaction. They were who they are, and I was happy to watch it. I really enjoyed it. I'm a self-described 'picky Deadhead' so I'm certainly not in the glorification of Wilco camp. But as I said last night - they may not have hit it out of the park but that was a sure, solid stand-up double. I was happy to see it and just proud of everyone. Everyone I talked to today seemed to really dig it. Watch out - this could reach critical mass in the not-too-distant future.
H to the ickle
Jeff's jacket during Walken was off the charts. I usually hate it when a band I really like is on SNL because for whatever reason, bands always sound like ass when they play in that studio. Now Wilco certainly didn't sound like ass but I don't think they really did themselves justice either.
k8tee
My brother, who's a relatively new fan (never seen them live, has heard Kicking TV, Summerteeth and SBS) said he liked it. He did say he thought Hate it Here was too mellow for SNL even though he likes the song. He did not mention the nudie suit, which I guess means he just assumed it was normal. Luckily, little bro is seeing them Tuesday!
jhh4321
thought they did a pretty excellent job. horns were awesome on hate it here. walken was probably a good choice given the setting. i thought the band sounded pretty good considering how bad the sound mix can be at SNL. oh and jeff's jacket on walken was straight pimpin. Atticus
Why do all you people hate wilco? I thought jay was stellar. christ...
ms. yvon
I stopped into VC tonight just to say that i loved that suit. That, and the commerical-to/from-show transition picture* of the band just before and after "Walken."*there must be a proper term for that?it's called a "bumper" and used when a show "bumps" to commercial. jethro
thought they did a pretty excellent job. horns were awesome on hate it here. walken was probably a good choice given the setting.Huh, my account still works. I had low expectations going in but thought they did really well with Hate It Here. Jeff sounded good and involved, sometimes he sounds bored. The band was solid, but what sold it was the horns. Too bad they weren't on the record. I've never liked Walken and while it's a better song live than on the record it'd have to be performed with naked cheerleaders to hold my attention. I realize Wilco isn't the band that I fell in love with anymore and that's why I don't come around much anymore but I wish they would have played something from an earlier record. Actually if I had a Wilco + SNL related wish it'd be that they'd had a chance to do the show when they had a better record to promote. Them tearing it up circa Being There would have been amazing. Oh well.
cryptique
I thought they were great. Someone hit a sour note near the beginning of "Hate It Here" (someone in the horn section, I think), but aside from that it was a good performance. I also was pleasantly surprised with how the song selection worked out. I wouldn't have chosen "Walken," but thought it turned out just fine. "Hate It Here," to me, was an obvious choice because they had the horn section in tow. Since the first time I heard them (on a Residency recording), the horns kicking in for the chorus have given me chills. Yeah, sure, I probably would have picked two other songs if it were up to me, but they played well, they looked happy, and I think they probably won a few new fans, or at least some "have to check those guys out" pre-converts. It's not often anymore that SNL features a real, top-of-their-game rock band, and maybe Wilco didn't quite blow the doors off the joint, but they held their own. Lynch
I missed the SNL performance. Something went screwy with my VCR so it didn't tape. Guess I will check 'em out on Youtube.

solace
i did like that Jeff actually sang/annunciated "i haaaate it heeere" much better than the studio/usual live versions
ction
i did like that Jeff actually sang/annunciated "i haaaate it heeere" much better than the studio/usual live versions I always forget, but SNL really highlighted for me how much different his voice sounds now (as compared to say 10 years ago). It's almost a completely different style of singing. I don't like it as much (I liked the rawer sound), but even as I was thinking that I had to admit he is a much better singer now, with way better control of his voice. jakobnicholas
I give it a solid "meh." Exactly. And that's what so disappointing/frustrating. Wilco has always been a band who's songs made me FEEL something. Hate it Here and Walken, to me, have NO substance....and I'm talking lyrics mixing with the music to create something to give the listener an emotion. At the residency shows, Jeff made it crystal clear he despised the song I Thought I Held You. It's my assumption he hates the syrupy lyrics. Well, in my opinion, those lyrics are Lennon-esque compared to Hate It Here. A song about not knowing what to do around the house while your friend/lover is gone? C'mon. Lame-O! And really, what IS Walken about? Anything? Even a song like I'm A Wheel, who many have said is a throw-away song, has lyrics that make me feel something. I'm bummed that a band I love.....mostly because of how their music makes me FEEL.....got a chance to present their music to a huge audience and played a song about some loser lost inside his house and another song about the same loser thinking about how great someone in his life is....songs that make a listener FEEL nothing. Sad.
Mrs. Peel
I just wish they switched the songs, because the rest of the show was so terrible I don't know how many people were still tuned in to see Walken, which I think would have a more widespread appeal to non-fans than Hate It Here. MattZ
I like how Hate it Here and Walken make me FEEL.
myboyblue
I thought both of their songs were really tight. It's difficult to translate your live act to a studio for a talk show or SNL. I think Wilco does it better than 90% of bands out there. They have become MUCH more comfortable in front of the camera post-"I am Trying to Break Your Heart".
JUDE
Nels' one second guitar solo at the end of hate it here made the entire performance for me.
jakobnicholas
Wilco is a great band. Wilco have tremendous musicians. But if I had to list my favorite 50 Wilco songs, Hate it Here and Walken wouldn't make the cut. I'm not sure if they'd make my top 75. I don't want to bag on Wilco for no reason. It's so freakin' awesome they got to play SNL. I just think it was opportunity lost. It would be like if the White Stripes never played SNL, and showed up and played You Don't Know What Love Is and Conquest.....neither of which would be in my top 5 album songs NOR a good representation of who the White Stripes are. Maybe R.E.M. will play SNL next month and play "Until the Day is Done" and "Houston".
